FIRST GRADE

Our trip to ANZ Stadium ended with a lesson in skill, speed, accuracy and a score line no club wants to travel back home with. It was a 22 goal deficit at the end of play – but – (and there is always a positive) the Tigers played well enough to suggest all is not lost.

The Swans were far too superior on the day and with the advantage of having a quality group of top up players from State level, they produced a brand of football that will be hard to beat come finals time by any team in the AFL Canberra competition.

The writing was on the scoreboard by quarter time with a ten goal quarter to the home team. In an all too familiar pattern – the longer each quarter goes – the more the score line blows out. Superior fitness is the most obvious reason. They are professional footballers and are relentless in their ambitions of securing a senior grade spot at the top level.

The Tigers produced some strong passages of play which give reason they can still impact on the competition this year. It was only three years ago that the Swans kicked 30. 11 (191) to the Tigers 10.1 (61) at the SCG that kicked started the Tigers into wining 6 of their next 7 matches and eventually a Grand Final berth against that very team.

The obvious highlight last Saturday evening was the inclusion of 15 year old Sam Jensen into the Tigers senior line-up. It was a fantastic occasion for the youngster playing at ANZ for his first senior game and then posting a goal with his first kick at that level. The excitement of his fellow team mates and the supporters in the vast arena was a sporting moment for all to witness.

The inform James Kavanagh provided plenty of forward movement with Toby Conroy gaining many possessions in a quality performance. Jason Satchell made a welcome return to the field after a long term injury.

Physio Danny Rutten has been a massive gain to the club.

The Tigers now have an all important match this Saturday at Manuka Oval against 5th placed Eastlake. A loss will draw the Demons level on points and with a stronger percentage take them into 4th position. A win for the Tigers will move them two games clear in the four with 7 games remaining.

Reserve Grade

The Tigers Reserve Grade team travelled to Amaroo on Sunday and played at the unfamiliar time of 2.00pm. The extra sleep-in didn’t provide any extra energy as the Gungahlin Jets provided strong opposition in the first quarter on the wide open spaces on their home ground. Eventually the Tigers took control of a quality game of footy to run out easy victors.

Brendan Ward, Freddie Nortje and Simon Mackie certainly came under notice of senior grade coach Mark Armstrong who was a keen observer of the game. The Kelly lads Hayden and Sean were both impressive throughout the match along with Michael Moss who gave plenty of drive in the third quarter when the game needed to be broken.

Ben Jabornik kept the competition leading goal kicker scoreless in a fine performance with Brett Ormston and Jared Daniel having strong performances throughout the match.

Under 18 Grade

The Under 18 Grade team enjoyed victory over Marist College at Marist. Not too many teams win matches at the Marist home ground but the Tigers played inspired football considering they were missing Sam Jensen to the 1st Grade team. By half time they had established a commanding lead. Not unexpectedly Marist came out hard in the last half and made the score respectable by full time even threatening the Tigers at one stage in the final quarter.

There were some excellent performances in this game. Fullback Kyle King continues to impress with his strong bullocking play and long kicking out of the backline ( a feature lost in modern day football these days). He provided plenty of advantage to players further a field. This quick movement of the ball from the backline has many positives if used correctly.

The ruck work of Jake Robinson and Dale Dickinson gave on ball players Jake Oram and Ryan Price a distinct advantage as both players enjoyed quality games around centre clearances. Jason Ainsworth gained his first taste of a Tigers jumper and played a solid game considering an eye injury prior to the game.

Best:	Pip Butt, Jacinta Froud, Amy McLenaghan , Davina Harris, Fran Langi, Bobbie Minniecon

The Queanbeyan Tigers can take a lot of positives out of their Friday night game against competition powerhouse Eastlake at a wet and wild Kingston Oval.

While the first quarter was not much to write home about on the scoreboard the Tigers did show they were more than capable of winning the one-on-one contests but gave the Eastlake team far too much space and were simply unable to create as many contest as they should have.

That changed after quarter time, helped somewhat by the heavens opening with torrential rain at times. The Tigers players lifted their efforts and intensity and made the Demons work hard for every kick. Pip Butt was outstanding running out of the back line and equally outstanding laying tackles and providing physical pressure. Not to be outdone was Amy McLenaghan who was also responsible for some big hits while having her best game for the season. The Tigers were unlucky not to kick a goal late in the term – the ball sailing through the big sticks to the roar of the Tigers Crowd (including some very vocal support from the Under 18s team and some ring ins from the Valley) but unfortunately it was touched off the boot.

At half time the Tigers were challenged not to be satisfied with one half-decent term and came out firing with Hannah Dunn showing the ACT coach that her ruck work is no laughing matter, Jacinta Froud leading the way as usual, Davina Harris, Jane Vucago , Chrisie Bourbous and Sarah Van Meurs working hard in the middle to give our forwards a chance. The Tigers took that opportunity and a free kick for a Eastlake throw gave Dani Lewis, who had been struggling with a neck injury all week and was only a last minute inclusion, the chance from 25m out. She kicked truly and the Tigers had the first goal of the second half, again much to the delight of the tigers supporters. The Tigers defence were outstanding for the rest of the term with Fran Langi, Bobbie Minniecon, Rach Short and Kristen Turner prominent.

The rain really came down in the final term and although the Tigers were unable to add to their score they kept making the competition front runners work hard in what was a real team effort with contributions across the ground. Besides the weather the other dampener on the night was a serious injury to Liz Langi who suffered a pretty bad shoulder dislocation.

Given the massive gap in terms of experience between the two teams the Tigers players can be happy with their efforts, particularly after quarter time, but should not get ahead of themselves and use the experience gained on the night to continue to improve in their first season. The next challenge is just as tough, travelling to Wagga Wagga to take on the Riverina Lions at 12noon next Saturday 3 July.

FIRST GRADE

The game went right down to the final siren with only two points separating the Tigers and Magpies when the “hooter” finally sounded after 13 minutes of over time. A goal after the siren to Paul Franchi gave a difference of 8 points in a match that could have gone either way.

The Tigers had three commanding leads during the match only for the Magpies to fight back into calculations each time eventually taking the lead at the 23 minute mark of the last quarter. It seemed they would once again defeat the Tigers when they posted another goal to take a nine point lead.

However the Tigers were not done and a goal on the run to an in form James Kavanagh followed by another to Captain Ryan Quade gave the Tigers the lead with minutes to go. They slowed the game down much to the cries of “kick the thing forward “ by the spectators but they knew what they were doing and moved the ball from one wing to the other around the backline and then eventually into the forward line with “Le Franchi” taking a chest mark 30 metres out when the siren sounded.

It was a tremendous win for the Tigers who are now in a three way battle for the all important 4th spot with Belconnen and Eastlake. The Magpies and Demons have superior percentages at 6% and 27% respectively.

For the Tigers, Captain Courageous Ryan Quade was outstanding in the ruck and around the ground. He repeatedly won the ball at the centre bounces and provided the team with strong marking options around the ground. No mark was more importantly than the grab in the dying minutes of the game to put the Tigers in front. His omission from the ACT team to participate in this weeks Country Championships is a real mystery with the NSW team picking up his services without question.

The Tigers dynamic threesome of Billy Neely, Mitch Daniher and Toby Conroy amassed a total of 106 possessions between them and in doing so provided the team with enough forward movement and control of the ball to enable a great win over tough opposition. Even though both clubs were missing key players through injury / suspension, the match was of high quality and exciting throughout.

There has to be a special mention to the Tigers inexperienced backline. They did a superb job in difficult circumstances missing players of the calibre of Thomo, Satchell and Irwin, Thomo being a late withdrawal on the day. Well don to Ben Jabornik on his debut 1st Grade match especially so on his birthday.

Reserve Grade.

Another quality win – which makes it six in a row. Competition front runners Belconnen have now lost two in a row after being undefeated up until the week before last when the Demons defeated them. They looked back on track with a 14 point advantage at three quarter time but the youthful Tigers combination attacked throughout the last quarter to take a well deserved victory.

The late withdrawal of Kris Thompson from the senior team provided yet another headache for Coach Pavese. For the second week running youngster Ryan Price doubled up and didn’t let the team down.

Up forward Freddie Nortje was a powerhouse taking some well judged marks in the first half eventually being rewarded with 4 goals. Another player pressing for senior grade selection again is Liam Wilkinson. His long running attempts on goal are a real feature with four goals to his credit. After saying he wasn’t playing on Thursday night due to a nagging injury, Beau Watts changed his mind by the next day and was tremendous on Saturday. He dominated proceedings throughout.

The little man Dave Corcoran was also an inspired person up forward creating havoc during he match and with the level heads of Greg Hair and Andrew Lieschke adding support to this very young team there seems to be a good feel amongst the group.

BELCONNEN MAGPIES	3	3	9	3	12	5	12	8	(80)

Under 18 Grade.

Two losses in a row have sent the alarm bells ringing. Coach Paul Campbell came down hard on the guys after the loss to the Magpies who provided quality opposition for the second placed Tigers outfit.

After being two games clear in equal first position they are now back with Marist in equal second and will have to improve 100% in coming weeks to maintain the double chance. Their performance was not without some quality players. Kyle King was again damaging in the backline and if he can get through a game without injury he will mature into a strong senior grade player down the track.

Youngster James Armstrong had his first run for the Under 18’s graduating from the Under 16 Grade team. His performance was spot on for a first timer enjoying many possessions as an in and under player.

The Tigers were in front at half time after the Magpies had kicked the first three goals. Discipline was a factor unsettling many of the younger players but once that was removed the Tigers played with more purpose. Unfortunately Belconnen wanted to win a touch more than the Tigers and they played with more purpose and desire.
It seems a few recent 18 year old birthday parties are taking its tole on this grade and if they don’t take stock of their abilities mixed with a balance of socializing then they could fall from grace very quickly.

The Queanbeyan Tigers went down fighting against reigning premiers Tuggeranong at Kambah on Sunday, looking fantastic in the traditional Tigers black with yellow sash.

Kicking with the wind and down the Kambah hill in the first quarter the Tigers started brightly and had plenty of possession in their forward line but were unable to convert their best chance falling to Tegan Tisma after she received a good shepherd from Fran Langi. The Hawks showed their class moving the ball from their back pocket without the Tigers getting near it to set up their first goal.

A free kick in front of goal late in the quarter gave the Hawks a 14 point lead at quarter time.

In the second term the Tigers were at their competitive best. For the majority of the quarter the Tigers tackled and pressured the Hawks. Davina ‘D’ Harris went down back and showed how to be first for the ball. Tegan was moved onto one of the Hawks prime movers and stopped her output through her running, tackling and harassing. Katie Newton gave a great contest out manned across the half forward line and Jane Vucago and Sarah Van Meurs were tireless on the wings however it was down back where the Tigers really shined. Rach ‘Shorty’ Short, playing against her old team, was outstanding at full back suffering leather poisoning late in the term. Amanda Oosterwergel showed her performance against Riverina was no fluke showing great determination in the back pocket. Chrissie Bourbous and Kristen ‘Kritta’ Turner also gave great rebound and run from half back. But each time the Tigers switched off they were punished and the Hawks three goals for the term came from a misjudged marking contest, Tess having busted her gut to tag one of the Hawks best been unable to run with her and a simple unmanned player at a ball up 20m out from goal. The margin at half time was 33 points.

In what is becoming a first year tradition the Tigers again saved their best for the third quarter. After some desperate defence, again led by Shorty, the ball managed to move into the forward line where the Tigers forwards showed real desperation locking into the forward line. Hannah Dunn, again asked to ruck non-stop all day, knocked it down to Siau Goh who was able to get boot to ball and kick truly, her first career goal and a great reward for Siau’s work ethic this season. For the rest of the term the midfield and defenders held firm Tegan close to best on ground continuing laying tackles and breaking up play with Kritta not far behind her. Late in the term Sarah Crowe took a fantastic mark on the last line of Defence and was able to find Amanda with a neat pass just before the siren sounded to end the term. In the third quarter the Tigers, playing in their first season, had held the team that has won three of the last six premierships goalless to win the term by three points and reduce the margin at three quarter time to an even 5 goals.

Kicking against the breeze and up the hill in the final term was always going to be tough, however the Tigers stayed competitive. Te Ani Lusk Waititi was moved back and had the Hawks forwards knowing they were in a game. Dani Louis held firm at centre half back and ex Tuggeranong players Jacinta Froud and D also pushed back hard to help the backline. Tegan, Shorty and Amanda continued to put pressure on the Hawks however the Hawks were able to break the shackles a little kicking three goals in the last five minutes to blow the final margin out to 57 points.

Despite another loss the Tigers continue to show tremendous improvement and a great team spirit. The Tigers will be able to have a short break with the bye next weekend before their final home game for the season taking on the Gungahlin Jets (11am Sat 31 July at Town Park) and hoping to turn around the 12 point loss from the opening round.

FIRST GRADE

Simply woeful - are the only words that can describe such an inept performance by the Tigers 1st Grade team last Saturday against Eastlake.

Had the Tigers won they could have almost sealed a finals berth. As it stands they will be flat out staying off the bottom of the ladder – a position they have not held since the dim dark days of the early seventies – 1971 in fact !!!

The Tigers knew the ramifications the result would bring and the reason such emphasis was placed on the match after a disappointing game against the Swans Reserves the previous week.

They looked sluggish, they looked slow and they looked as if they wanted to rack up individual statistics such was the overuse of handball, short kicks and indirect play into their forward line.

The less said the better.

The Tigers plight won’t be made any easier against Ainslie this Sunday at Dairy Farmers Park. The Tricolours are placed in second position and travelling quite nicely after a few early season hiccups.
Other than the effort of Bill Neely and the superb effort of James Kavanagh at CHF there were few other Tigers worthy of a mention in a dismal 58 point thrashing.

EASTLAKE	3	6	7	7	11	12	17	16	118
Best Players: B. Neely, James Kavanagh.

RESERVE GRADE

The Tigers and Eastlake were equal on competition points in second position before last weeks match even though the Tigers had suffered two losses to the Demons this year. The game was always going to be of a high standard and that it was.

From the outset both teams displayed a keenness to win the hard ball and two early goals to the Demons set the tone for an interesting match throughout. The same old names keep popping up as strong contributors each week but to the credit of all who took the field the 4 point victory was a fantastic win over quality opposition from a complete team effort however 50m penalties marred the match.

The Demons have a game in hand against Tuggeranong being the postponed washed out match a month ago. It is imperative the Tigers focus each week on upcoming games if they are secure a top two berth and a double chance in the finals.

Under 18 Grade

Manuka Oval was significantly wet and add an early morning fog resulted in freezing conditions for the youngsters. It took most of the first quarter for the players to finally adapt to the conditions but once they did they took control over an opposition lacking numbers on the bench.

There were some standout performances: Andrew Swan – returning from a stint in the seniors dominated. It won’t be long before he is back in the 1st Grade team. Ryan Price showed his pace and ability to break the packs giving the forward line heaps of opportunities. Dale Dickinson and Jake Robinson form a are powerful ruck due and are excellent around the ground.

In fairness to the rest of the team it was fantastic to see a couple of players who rarely receive a mention gain valuable on field time. Mitchell Theunissen posted three important goals and once he develops physically will be an important cog in this team in future years. Lachlan Dowling is another who enjoyed his time – his pace being a distinct advantage. James Murphy, Dean Solway and Jack Bowyer have all been strong contributors in recent games.

Round 8 v Riverina @ McPherson Oval, Wagga Wagga 3 Jul 10

QUEANBEYAN	0.0	0.0	0.0	0.0 (0)
RIVERINA 5.5	13.10	15.12	20.13 (133)

Best:	Bobbie Minniecon, Fran Langi, Pip Butt, Jacinta Froud, Sarah Van Meurs, Gen Fleeton

The first road trip to Wagga proved to be a very tough learning experience for the Queanbeyan Tigers women. Although the team had suffered from injuries and illness to key players prior to the match it was still a disappointing effort, particularly in the first half.

From the opening bounce the Riverina team dominated the centre square clearances and provided their forwards with clean ball. The effort and contesting that the Tigers have prided themselves on all season just wasn’t there consistently enough although there were several reasonable individual efforts with Bobbie Minnecon playing well in Defence before being moved up the ground and Fran Langi and Gen Fleeton trying hard in the key defensive posts.

To the Tigers credit they put on a much improved performance after the half time break with Pip Butt doing well having been thrown into the ruck, Sarah Van Meurs finding plenty of the ball and skipper Jacinta Froud trying to lead the way as usual. The backline also held firm and restricted the Riverina team to a credible two goals in the third term.

The start of the final quarter saw the Tigers best passage for the day. Gen won a one-on-one contest at full back and released to Siau Goh who found Sarah V on the hard lead. Sarah found Jane Vucago in the middle of the ground who in turn hit the skipper up with a precise pass. Jacinta found Katie Newton across half forward but unfortunately the passage broke down and for the rest of the term normal transmission was resumed as the Tigers tried hard but the Riverina team were able to find ways to score, particular from stoppages.

After the long bus trip home, the team did manage to have a win on the weekend taking out the Karaoke Challenge in fine style, demonstrating that despite the hard slog on the field this season the team is sticking together off the field which bodes well for the rest of the season and beyond.

A quick thanks to all the support staff who helped get the team to Wagga Wagga and back safely. Thanks to Nick for driving the bus, Mark for travelling down to serve both as goal umpire, and then drinks waiter on the way home and of course Joan and Judy who continue to give great support to the team as Manager and Sports Trainer. And can’t leave out Jonesy who did a great job in the fluro green of the team runner and arguably an even better job in the short black dress later at the Tigers Club.

Ina quirk of the draw the Tigers take on the Riverina team in the next round, this time hosting at Queanbeyan Town Park at 11am on Saturday where they’ll be keen to put up a more competitive performance.

AFL Network Southern Cross TEN has come on board as a Major Corporate Sponsor of the Tigers Club for 2010 and 2011.

Announcing the arrangement Southern Cross TEN Group General Manager Tim Davenport believes the Sponsorship of a local AFL Canberra Club will assist promote the local competition throughout the regional areas of NSW through their associated regional stations.

Southern Cross Media are one of the major distributors of AFL games in Australia and have welcomed the opportunity to promote a local AFL Canberra Club throughout their vast network in Canberra and NSW.

With the AFL floating the idea of a new competition in 2010 encompassing Clubs from the ACT, NSW, Queensland and Northern Territory, the new sponsorship arrangement couldn’t come at a better time for the Tigers Club. Promotion of the Club through the network will have enormous advantages as the club promotes and develops its brand in anticipation of a new competition.

Marketing Manager of Southern Cross Media Joel Feuerherdt believes the Club will be able to attract other sponsorship arrangements by way of its involvement with the television network.

Although the value of the sponsorship arrangement has not been released General Manager of the Tigers Club Ron Fowlie has indicated it is substantial and will be invaluable to the ongoing costs of managing a successful sporting organisation.

It could have been even better when Dennis marked 40 meters out from goal with only seconds remaining however the shot at goal sailed past the big sticks. He played another consistent game and showed their is still a few more left in him yet and no doubt will add to his 200 game tally.

Tigers Take On The Hawks

It’s a real battle for fourth spot at the moment and one such battle takes place at Dairy Farmers Park on Sunday against the Tuggeranong Hawks.

The Hawks sit one game plus percentage outside of the four after losing to the Eastlake Demons on Wednesday night in the postponed match of Round 8.
Eastlake have joined the Tigers in fourth spot ahead on percentages but the Tigers have a game to play and that game is on Sunday in one of the most important battles of the year.

The Hawks are prone to upsetting teams above them and in particular the Tigers Club. Last season was the first in many they didn’t beat the Tigers in some sought of upset win.

A week’s lay off from the general bye should have the local team fired up after their dismal performance against Ainslie in Round 8. A number of players should return to the line-up including Billy Neely, Andrew Lieschke, Jason Satchell, Neil Irwin and possibly Matt Liddle.

The Reserve Grade need to consolidate their position on the ladder and will find it a tough slog against a talented Hawks combination who sit equal with the Tigers on the ladder.

The Under 18 Grade team will play the 9.30am curtain raiser match against a win less Hawks combination but in this grade anything can happen.
The Tigers Ladies team will play ANU at Harman at 10.00am (not the Queanbeyan park as originally scheduled).

Dennis Quade to play his 200th Club Game for the Tigers

One of the Tigers longest serving players Dennis Quade will chalk up his 200th Club game on Sunday against Tuggeranong Hawks at Dairy Farmers Park.

This is a wonderful milestone for this hugely popular team member of the Tigers organisation.

He will lead the Reserve Grade team onto the field at approx 11.20am. Supporters are invited to join the Under 18 Grade and Reserve Grade players on the field to form a guard of honour for DQ when he takes the field.

DQ is one of many descendants of the Quade family to have represented the Club in one way or another. He joined the Tigers Club at age 17 from Parkes in the Central Riverina and has since played 69 1st Grade games and 130 Reserve Grade matches with one to play and he has played in both grades this season.

Most of his 200 Club games would have been played in the ruck – which takes great stamina and perseverance with the constant body contact of this position. His popularity both on and off the field deserves special mention with his enormous enthusiasm and dedication being part and parcel of his everyday football life.

Some clubs count Under 18 / Under 19 Grade matches in their total tally for games played. The Tigers don’t, but had they done so, he would have passed the milestone some time ago having played his initial years with the Tigers in the then Under 19 Grade ranks.

He has achieved the following accolades during his long and distinguished career:

•	1st Grade Premiership Player – 2000
•	Reserve Grade Premiership Player – 2007 and 2009 (Captain)
•	Reserve Grade Grand Finalist – 2001, 2003, 2006 and 2008
•	Reserve Grade Best and Fairest – 1999 and 2007
•	AFL Canberra Reserve Grade Best and Fairest – 1999 and 2007

First Grade

After a confident start to the season the Tigers 1st Grade team have lowered their colours for the fourth successive week against an impressive Ainslie combination. The Tricolours were far too strong in most departments of the game clearly out muscling a much smaller Queanbeyan combination.

The Tigers played only five days earlier on a very heavy track at a waterlogged Dairy Farmers Park and their leg speed showed on the day. Although the current situation is in no way critical, it will be – if they don’t record a victory in the next encounter against Tuggeranong Hawks at Dairy Farmers Park on 20 June.

There is a bye this long weekend which will give them a buffer to “mend” some pride and hopefully see the return of a number of players to all three teams.
For the first time in 6 weeks the Tigers suffered no long term injuries.

“It’s not the end of the world, but its something we have got to get through” James Kavanagh said at the after match awards. Kav had played his 150th first grade AFL Canberra match and was bitterly disappointed with the result. “We’ve dropped form for a number of reasons, confidence maybe – it’s hard to put a finger on it. If you knew you’d know how to fix it !!” he said.

Kavanagh said one of the reasons the Tigers had gone off track had been a lack of confidence and injuries to key personal which included fullback Neil Irwin, fellow back-line players in Jason Satchell, Tom Hollis, on ballers Matt Liddle, Andrew Lieschke and Billy Neely plus pinch hit ruck-man Mitch Heaslip.

Jake Oram and Andrew Swan waiting for their 1st Grade clash.

Roy Jaques played his first match of the season after off season surgery and will be better for the run. The Tigers included a third member from the Under 18 Grade in Ryan Price. His inclusion saw one of the youngest teams ever fielded by the Tigers in a first grade match.
But it wasn’t the youngsters who let the team down with a “bit” of sole searching needed by some of the more experienced players if the Tigers are to get out of the current situation. Costly turnovers in the Ainslie forward 50 provided them with 7 goals.
The Tigers were best served by Paul Slater, Kris Thompson, Brett Fruend and once again Toby Conroy.

Reserve Grade

The Tigers Reserve Grade recorded a well earned victory after being well in arrears midway through the second quarter. A spirited fight back has enabled the team to move into equal second position on the ladder. At one stage they posted 8 goals without reply during the 2nd and third quarters.

Brett Ormston showed his value to the team with a courageous and well fought out game considering his current fitness. Newcomer Fred Nortje is gradually gaining in confidence and will be a handy player up forward during the remainder of the year. Dave Corcoran was at his “finger licking best” with some great work at ground level. Brendan Ward showed his undoubted talent with two goals.

AINSLIE	1	2	5	3	5	5	6	11	47

Under 18 Grade

An under strength Under 18 Grade team were well defeated after a close encounter until mid way through the third term. Nine goals to the Tricolours without reply proved costly to a youthful Tigers combination but nothing can be taken away from the Ainslie victory as they were missing quite a number of their better players.
Sam Jensen led the way with five goals with Jack Bowyer and Jordan Eagle trying the hardest in the back-line. Youngsters Jake Robinson and Mitch Price also came under notice for their respective games. Taylor Lee also provided plenty of spark at CHF.

AINSLIE 3	2	5	8	11	10	15	12	102

Queanbeyan
Goals:

While the scoreboard showed a ‘no-contest’ the newest team in ACTWAFL ranks continue to show a great deal of effort and some encouraging signs of improvement against a Magpies team that is arguably the best running team in the competition and close to the highest skilled.

In a match played in great spirit the Tigers tried hard to compete and turn the game into a series of one-on-one contests as the Magpies showed how dangerous they can be once they get their running game going. The Tigers showed in the first quarter that they are at their best fresh with Kristen Turner, Jane Vucago and Fran Langi applying great defensive pressure and leading a backline that made the Magpies work hard for every goal.

The second term started brightly as Rach Short put on a great shepherd to give Davina Harris time to run the ball out of the backline but some harsh and completely unnecessary over-officiating of the ‘exclusion zone’ and resultant 50 metre penalties gifted Belconnen half of their goals for the term and appeared to sap some of the Tigers pressure.

The Tigers applied more pressure in the second half, skipper Jacinta Froud and vice Dani Lewis leading the way. Hannah Dunn continued her stellar start to the year continuing to throw herself into marking contests with little regard for her own safety, tackling herself to a stand still. Katie Newton, Sarah Van Meurs and Liz Langi all had their best games for the season but in the end the Tigers were beaten to the footy too often and ultimately outclassed by a Magpies team far more experienced and skilled on the day.

The Tigers will enjoy the long weekend off before returning to their home ground to take on ANU at 11am on Saturday 19 June.

The Tigers James Kavanagh will play his 150th AFL Canberra game against his former club on Saturday at Ainslie Oval. Originally recruited to Canberra by Ainslie from VFL Club Coburg, Kav has been a vital cog in the Tigers team since moving across the border in 2007. His 61st game with the Tigers is added to his 89 for Ainslie to give the 150th game milestone.

No one will more prouder than his parents Michael and Maggy who regularly travel from Melbourne to see their lad play in the black and gold.
He has been a fantastic character of the Tigers Club both on and off the field since joining our organisation.

Well done Kav and we look forward to Saturday’s game.

The Tigers have added yet another youngster to their squad of players for the clash against Ainslie. Ryan Price joins Jake Oram, Andrew Swan and Sam Daniel – all of whom have been promoted in recent weeks to cover the injury concerns of the Tigers Senior Grade team.

“ Pricey” played for the Sydney Swans Reserves last weekend – also against Ainslie – along with fellow team mate Cameron Cobby. His elevation into the senior grade squad of players from which a final 22 will be named after training on Friday evening will further weaken the Tigers Under 18 Grade team. They clash with joint competition leaders Ainslie in the early match on Saturday. With Swan, Oram and Price having been amongst the Tigers best at this level of football during the year and with top spot up for grabs there will have to be a huge effort from all other players to win this match.

U18 Player Ryan Price has been added to the Senior Squad.

The Tigers Reserve Grade also face a monumental hurdle against an Ainslie team hurting after suffering a loss to Gungahlin last weekend. It was the Jets first win since entering the Reserve Grade competition this year. The Jets have many former Ainslie players in their team and are Coached by Todd Pulford – the Tricolours leading games record holder. The Tigers will field an unsettled line up on Saturday but have a number of players returning after last Sunday’s loss to competition leaders Belconnen.

The Senior Grade team have the most to lose. They sit precariously in the four at the moment with the knowledge that fifth and sixth placed teams – Eastlake and Tuggeranong have a game in hand after their match was postponed last weekend. The Tigers lost to Ainslie in the last encounter at DFP when leading at half time by 35 points.

The Tigers Ladies team meet Belconnen at Jamison Oval on Sunday at 12 Noon.

A Tribute to a Wonderful AFL Canberra follower.

Queanbeyan and Tuggeranong Football Clubs acknowledged the wonderful support and commitment of Darryl McLindin to AFL Canberra last Sunday. He passed away on Sunday 20 June with both clubs observing a minute silence prior to the match. Darryl had served the Hawks for a long period of time. He was a founding member of the Hawks original club Sutherland. Wife Pat, a devout Hawks, Sydney Swans and sometimes Queanbeyan Tigers supporter was in attendance at the game for what was a moving tribute to a fine gentleman of the game. Both teams also wore black arm bands.

First Grade

Accuracy played an important part in the Tigers 50 point victory over Tuggeranong Hawks at Dairy Farmers Park last Sunday. The Tigers posted 7.1 in the first quarter, a further 9.2 in the second and finished off the last half of football with 7 goals 5. The Hawks however did not fair well in front of the big sticks posting 13.18 for the game virtually destroying any hope they had of causing an upset against the home team.

The Tigers welcomed back Andrew Lieschke for his first game in 2010 along with Neil Irwin who has been missing since the Round 4 clash against Ainslie. Billy Neely also returned to the field of play after missing the last three games through injury. Kris Thompson was again a late withdrawal from the team due to work commitments which will continue to restrict his appearances for the club since his graduation at RMC.

By half time the Tigers had a commanding lead of 16.3 to 6.7 with James Kavanagh leading the way with 6 goals. A ten goal haul was in the making but to the Hawks credit they shut down the dangerous Kav and allowed him no further contribution to the scoreboard. He was however a strong contributor throughout the game and is currently in superb form.

Toby Conroy and Billy Neely were excellent contributors around the park. Their skill level and knowledge of the game provides excellent guidance to our young players. There is certainly something about Tim Cook. He reads the play in “slow motion” while going at full pace which excites all in attendance. Nothing can be taken from the dynamic Mitch Daniher who undoubtedly is heading for a large number of votes again in the Club Best and Fairest and the Leagues Mulrooney Medal.

A last half fade out is a real concern for the coaching staff. This is not the first time this has happened and unfortunately the team had a real opportunity to claw back some of the percentage the Eastlake Demons gained by way of their match against Tuggeranong the previous week.

Reserve Grade

The Tigers Reserve Grade team went into this match with the knowledge that a win would put them ahead of the Hawks on the ladder and provide them with a real opportunity of pushing for a top two position as the season evolves.

A 200 Game milestone to Captain Dennis Quade provided plenty of incentive to win the match – and that they did – with a comfortable 80 point victory. Numerous players returned to the team after being unavailable and they provided the impetus to push the team to victory. The return of Daniel Jabornik was welcomed. He provided a strong target up forward and was rewarded with five goals while giving a few off to the dynamic Dave Corcoran.

Newcomer Fred Nortje is another strong target up forward and he could press for a senior grade spot down the track. Across half back Simon Mackie continues to impress selectors. After three years out of the game and with limited training under his belt Brendan Ward is another who is improving as the season evolves and his three goals were gems. Don’t forget young Gerard Walshe who posted two goals and just like his old man didn’t mind telling a few people about them !!!

And the old bloke – DQ – played his usual game – only this time it was his 200th Club appearance. Well done “OC”.

Under 18 Grade

Accurate kicking was a feature of the Tigers Under 18 Grade thumping of the Hawks last Sunday. 20.6 is a fantastic score against a Tuggeranong Hawks team that took the field with plenty of confidence. Unfortunately for them, the Tigers were red hot with a backline hell bent on not letting the opposition score. The Tigers mid field were determined to give every opportunity to its forward line and they dually took advantage of those opportunities.

Don’t be surprised if 16 year old Sam Jensen doesn’t break into the Tigers senior line-up in the not too distant future. 18 goals in three games is a fantastic effort. Just image when he puts on a few inches in height. Kyle King down back was unstoppable. He has a real gift and if he can stay on the paddock without injury he is another with a real future.

The name Shannon Winmar keeps popping up. This youngster joined the Club about a month ago and is a real find for the Club. He has excellent skills, is mature and very clever around goals. His partner in crime Ryan Price displayed on field maturity around the centre bounces and his hard and elusive running style gave the Tigers plenty of “win situations” at the clearances.

The “Rat” Daniel Pauletto played his best game for the season while Jake Robinson continues to impress at this level.

QUEANBEYAN	4	3	11	3	16	4	20	6	(126)

The Queanbeyan Tigers continue to show that they can be competitive in the AFL Canberra Women’s Comp but have again come up short of a win in Round 6 against ANU at a windswept and cold Harman Oval.

In the first half the usual suspects were again prominent Hannah Dunn, Jacinta Froud and Davina Harris in the midfield and Kristen Turner, Rach Short and Dani Lewis across half back, with Dani in particular doing a great job on one of ANU’s key players. But what was even more pleasing were some of the other Tigers performers with Siau Goh playing her best match for the season across half forward flank getting herself involved in everything as well as Jane Vucago on the wing backing up with some great second and third efforts. At half time it was a world cup inspired 1-1 draw with the Tigers behind coming from a great run from Davina that included a couple of bounces and a long bomb that just fell the wrong side of the stick.

After matching the ANU girls in the first half unfortunately the Tigers lack of run started to bite in the third term although there were highlights with Tess Kolaric was starting to find the footy in the midfield and Pip Butt, after injuring her knee in pre-season, making her debut for the Tigers against her old club and playing well at full back. After a 50 minute arm wrestle it was ANU that broke free and kicked two goals in quick succession. To the Tigers credit they kept toughing out the term.

The ball spent the first half of the final term over the far wing as both teams battled fiercely. The Tigers were able to move the ball forward and win a free kick for a ruck infringement that unfortunately meant Hannah had to leave the field. Jacinta, who may or may not have been the nearest Tigers player, stood up to the mark and kicked truly from 20. Game on. However without Hannah ANU were able to win the centre clearance and move the ball forward and after a couple of misses were able to kick the sealer that left the final margin of 14 points.

For the Tigers it was another very honest performance despite running out of gas in the second half but obviously there is plenty for the team to work on. They’ll get that chance next week when the Tigers take on Eastlake at Kingston Oval under lights on Friday Night starting at 7pm.
