The 2010/2011 Armstrong Academy will be entering the new season with gusto with the Junior Club gaining Corporate Support from well known businesses BORDER STAINLESS STEEL, MARTIN DONNELLY Pty LTD, RUMBLES CRANES and SPACE DEVELOPMENTS all agreeing to terms for the next two years. The Academy is opened to all U16s and U18s players.

A big thank you to these companies who have thrown their full support behind Queanbeyan’s endeavours to develop local junior AFL talent. The Academy provides excellent coaching structures to players who are looking to improve their football skills to advance to the next level. Once again the program will be spearheaded by Paul Campbell. Paul is currently the Tigers U18s Coach, CATS U18s Assistant Coach and the ACT U16s School boys Coach.

Only in it’s third year the Academy has already produced some excellent results. We currently have graduates from the Academy now playing for Greater West Sydney, NSW/ACT RAMS, Sydney Swans Reserves and Queanbeyan Tigers First Grade.

This year the program will go to a whole new level with possible games being planned against other Academy’s, a planned trip to the AIS and specialist coaching being available by former Tigers Stars.

Invitations and applications will be available soon so please keep a watch out for further details. Any inquiries please give Adrian a call on 0429 913 436 or email qtigers.junior@tigersclub.com.au.

The winter program had 34 participants and they were put through an 8 week program learning the skills of Aussie Rules Footy. Approx 25 boys and girls from the program played in the half time game and there are signs that we have some future tigers stars coming through the ranks.

A big thank you to Chris and Phil who do a fantastic job with the youngsters and they have already started plans for the Spring Program and we will notify everyone when the dates are finalised.

Also a big thank you to Darcy Ryan from Proggresive Controls who has been the QBN sponsor of our program and to all of the parents who have supported our program in 2010.

Approx 20 people led by club president Murray Lembit rocked up at 9am, gathered their kits and trudged off into the wet streets as part of the worth while cause the Salvation Army Red Shield Appeal Door Knock.

Once again our mighty Tigers people were at the for front of fundraising collecting $1600.00 in our area and again showing the QBN community that the Tigers are the best supporters of local community Charities.

The much anticipated visit of AFL Superstar and Fremantle Dockers Captain Matthew Pavlich came to fruition when he arrived at Dairy Farmers Park on Sunday. Extremely surprised by the Tigers Facilities and he was quoted saying “that we have by far the best set up in country football that he has seen”.

Matthew arrived at 11.15am and promptly took our Armstrong Academy Players for an hour training session mainly involving the skills that Fremantle implement during the week. Approx 180 people were on hand to witness how an AFL player prepares for training.

Following the training session Matthew addressed the crowd in a Q&A format in the Tigers Grand Stand. There were lots of outstanding questions asked and some even had Matthew laughing. After this he then signed autographs and took pictures with fans. All in all and outstanding afternoon was had by everyone.

There is no doubt that Matthew is a superstar in every sense of the word and we at the tigers wish him all the best for the rest of the 2010 season.

The Queanbeyan Junior Tigers would like to thank everyone who contributed to the success of the day, Tamarah Knox – AFL Canberra, Cameron James – NSW/ACT AFL, Home Hardware Karabar, ACTEW/AGL, Dairy Farmers, WIN TV, Canberra Times, Queanbeyan Age, 2CC, AFL Canberra Record, Officeworks, Sharp Fyshwick, Coates Hire QBN and the AFL community in Canberra – A MASSIVE THANK YOU TO YOU ALL!

At the end of June this year the Queanbeyan Tigers Senior and Junior Clubs sponsored three of it’s Armstrong Academy players to attend the Western Bulldogs Academy which was held over two days at the Mission Elite Training Centre Whitton Oval, Melbourne.

Young Guns Sam Jensen, Jack Bowyer and James Armstrong were shown what it is like to be an AFL player and areas they need to improve in to become a better player. During the two days they were addressed by Senior Coach Rodney Eade, Bulldogs Star Daniel Cross, Bulldogs Recruitment Manager Simon Dalrymple and many of the Bulldogs Training and Fitness staff.

The boys were also taken out to the Victorian University and put through the same testing that is conducted at the AFL Draft Camp every year. They also trained on the hallowed turf of the legendary Whitton Oval, Footscray.

Former Tigers player Brett Daniher who now works full time for the Western Bulldogs is to be thanked for providing the Tigers with the opportunity to be able to send some of our future stars down to experience the world of an AFL Club.

This association will continue as the Queanbeyan Tigers have already committed to three places in next years Bulldogs Academy. These players will be selected from the 2010/11 Armstrong Academy Program.
