Australian Country Football Carnival

Congratulations to AFL Canberra in particular Managing Director Geoff Gosling and staff members Russell Taylor, Tamarah Knox and Amy Dwyer for their organisation of the Australian Country Football Championships. The Carnival was a credit to all concerned.

To our many volunteers who assisted in the two day event at Dairy Farmers Park including the washing of every team’s jumpers, shorts, socks, “jocks” and whatever else could be thrown into the laundry bags – a huge thank you for your efforts.

Tigers Coach Mark Armstrong commented last Saturday morning that he had gone from being the All Australian Coach (2008) to the All Australian sock washer after managing to clean the Victorian Country team jumpers etc overnight. Not an easy job when they wear white jumpers.

The following assisted during the event: Rowan Johnstone, Elise Burnell, Ian Purnell, Lynlee Satchell, Judy Mustard, Mark Armstrong, Adrian Pavese, Wally and Leslie Thompson, Bob / Lyn Gibbs, and Family, Di McGinley, Nick Vosnakes, Ray Daniel, Shannon Winmar, Toby Yates, Lisa Bush, Steve Camp, Matty Mapleson, Graham Harmer, Darryl and Robyn Jenkins, Jill and Nicole Bright, Michael Rutherford, Lyn MacKenzie and Scott Taylor, Doug Daniel, Queanbeyan Rotary, Sids for Kids volunteers, players from the Marist Under 18 Grade team, Roger Beam, Mr Roulstone, Keith and Siau Jones and the Harman Football Club.

All Australian Vice Captain

Congratulations to our very own James Kavanagh on being selected as Vice Captain of the All Australian team and that of other members from the ACT who gained selection including Chad Gibson, Marcus Crook, Matt Hearn, Ben Hughes and Griffin Underwood. “Kav” had a fantastic Carnival as Captain of the AFL Canberra team.
Our other representatives acquitted themselves well in both the NSW and ACT teams. Unfortunately Billy Neely has an injury from the Carnival and “may” miss a few games but knowing this bloke he “may “ not such is his commitment to his fitness and the team.

Briedis to Play 100th Club Game

This weeks match against Tuggeranong Hawks represents the 100th Club Game for Paul Briedis. This is a wonderful achievement for PB who has travelled for the past four years from Sydney to play for his beloved Tigers. He said he would never play for another club. He certainly kept his word during this time with a commitment that surpasses many others who are sometimes flat out travelling around the corner to attend training !!!! Well done mate. He will be inducted into the Tigers 100 Club on 28 August.

Hawthorn v Swans

The Tigers play the Sydney Swans Reserves at the SCG next Saturday as the curtain raiser to the Swans / Hawthorn match. The Tigers game commences at 9.50am with the main match at 1.00pm.
On offer are tickets to the game for $20 each. Please contact Chook at the Tigers Office on 62993467 or email qtigers@tigersclub.com.au. There are only limited tickets available.

NEXT HOME MATCH AT DAIRY FARMERS PARK

Our next home match at Dairy Farmers Park is on Sunday 22 August against Belconnen.

The Club has a large range of merchandise which will be significantly reduced and available from our merchandise tent at the ground. Stock up for 2011 or buy for Christmas, Fathers / Mothers Day, Birthdays – whatever the occasion.

Tigers Fly to Swans Match through Maria Slater Travel.

A number of players and officials will take the opportunity to fly to Sydney next week for the clash against the Sydney Swans. Usually the Club travels by bus the day before when playing the early game at the SCG but on this occasion have decided to fly down on the morning of the match.
Although the majority of the group will travel by plane quite a number will be travelling the day before to “acclimatise” with the Sydney weather. Travel arrangements are being made through sponsor Maria Slater Travel in Mawson who are strong supporters of the Tigers Club. Thanks Maria and Brian for your support. (Just happens that “slats” (Paul) is their son)

Congratulations

Warm congratulations to former Tigers player Sam Quade and wife Danielle on the birth of their second child – a son – named Dane. This is a wonderful occasion for the Quade Family who have obviously been close associates of the Tigers Club since 1984. Sam played a number of games for the Tigers during his period at the club but has lived away from Canberra / Queanbeyan for many years including time in London, Hobart and now a resident of Melbourne. When visiting his parents – Brian and Lyn – in Canberra he often visits the Tigers Club. Well done and all the best with a new little Tiger.

The Academy is opened to all U16s and U18s players.

A big thank you to these companies who have thrown their full support behind Queanbeyan’s endeavours to develop local junior AFL talent. The Academy provides excellent coaching structures to players who are looking to improve their football skills to advance to the next level. Once again the program will be spearheaded by Paul Campbell. Paul is currently the Tigers U18s Coach, CATS U18s Assistant Coach and the ACT U16s School boys Coach.

Only in it’s third year the Academy has already produced some excellent results. We currently have graduates from the Academy now playing for Greater West Sydney, NSW/ACT RAMS, Sydney Swans Reserves and Queanbeyan Tigers First Grade.

This year the program will go to a whole new level with possible games being planned against other Academy’s, a planned trip to the AIS and specialist coaching being available by former Tigers Stars.

FIRST GRADE

The game went right down to the final siren with only two points separating the Tigers and Magpies when the “hooter” finally sounded after 13 minutes of over time. A goal after the siren to Paul Franchi gave a difference of 8 points in a match that could have gone either way.

The Tigers had three commanding leads during the match only for the Magpies to fight back into calculations each time eventually taking the lead at the 23 minute mark of the last quarter. It seemed they would once again defeat the Tigers when they posted another goal to take a nine point lead.

However the Tigers were not done and a goal on the run to an in form James Kavanagh followed by another to Captain Ryan Quade gave the Tigers the lead with minutes to go. They slowed the game down much to the cries of “kick the thing forward “ by the spectators but they knew what they were doing and moved the ball from one wing to the other around the backline and then eventually into the forward line with “Le Franchi” taking a chest mark 30 metres out when the siren sounded.

It was a tremendous win for the Tigers who are now in a three way battle for the all important 4th spot with Belconnen and Eastlake. The Magpies and Demons have superior percentages at 6% and 27% respectively.

For the Tigers, Captain Courageous Ryan Quade was outstanding in the ruck and around the ground. He repeatedly won the ball at the centre bounces and provided the team with strong marking options around the ground. No mark was more importantly than the grab in the dying minutes of the game to put the Tigers in front. His omission from the ACT team to participate in this weeks Country Championships is a real mystery with the NSW team picking up his services without question.

The Tigers dynamic threesome of Billy Neely, Mitch Daniher and Toby Conroy amassed a total of 106 possessions between them and in doing so provided the team with enough forward movement and control of the ball to enable a great win over tough opposition. Even though both clubs were missing key players through injury / suspension, the match was of high quality and exciting throughout.

There has to be a special mention to the Tigers inexperienced backline. They did a superb job in difficult circumstances missing players of the calibre of Thomo, Satchell and Irwin, Thomo being a late withdrawal on the day. Well don to Ben Jabornik on his debut 1st Grade match especially so on his birthday.

Reserve Grade.

Another quality win – which makes it six in a row. Competition front runners Belconnen have now lost two in a row after being undefeated up until the week before last when the Demons defeated them. They looked back on track with a 14 point advantage at three quarter time but the youthful Tigers combination attacked throughout the last quarter to take a well deserved victory.

The late withdrawal of Kris Thompson from the senior team provided yet another headache for Coach Pavese. For the second week running youngster Ryan Price doubled up and didn’t let the team down.

Up forward Freddie Nortje was a powerhouse taking some well judged marks in the first half eventually being rewarded with 4 goals. Another player pressing for senior grade selection again is Liam Wilkinson. His long running attempts on goal are a real feature with four goals to his credit. After saying he wasn’t playing on Thursday night due to a nagging injury, Beau Watts changed his mind by the next day and was tremendous on Saturday. He dominated proceedings throughout.

The little man Dave Corcoran was also an inspired person up forward creating havoc during he match and with the level heads of Greg Hair and Andrew Lieschke adding support to this very young team there seems to be a good feel amongst the group.

BELCONNEN MAGPIES	3	3	9	3	12	5	12	8	(80)

Under 18 Grade.

Two losses in a row have sent the alarm bells ringing. Coach Paul Campbell came down hard on the guys after the loss to the Magpies who provided quality opposition for the second placed Tigers outfit.

After being two games clear in equal first position they are now back with Marist in equal second and will have to improve 100% in coming weeks to maintain the double chance. Their performance was not without some quality players. Kyle King was again damaging in the backline and if he can get through a game without injury he will mature into a strong senior grade player down the track.

Youngster James Armstrong had his first run for the Under 18’s graduating from the Under 16 Grade team. His performance was spot on for a first timer enjoying many possessions as an in and under player.

The Tigers were in front at half time after the Magpies had kicked the first three goals. Discipline was a factor unsettling many of the younger players but once that was removed the Tigers played with more purpose. Unfortunately Belconnen wanted to win a touch more than the Tigers and they played with more purpose and desire.
It seems a few recent 18 year old birthday parties are taking its tole on this grade and if they don’t take stock of their abilities mixed with a balance of socializing then they could fall from grace very quickly.

BELCONNEN MAGPIES	3	3	3	4	6	7	10	8	(68)
The Queanbeyan Tigers went down fighting against reigning premiers Tuggeranong at Kambah on Sunday, looking fantastic in the traditional Tigers black with yellow sash.

Kicking with the wind and down the Kambah hill in the first quarter the Tigers started brightly and had plenty of possession in their forward line but were unable to convert their best chance falling to Tegan Tisma after she received a good shepherd from Fran Langi. The Hawks showed their class moving the ball from their back pocket without the Tigers getting near it to set up their first goal.

A free kick in front of goal late in the quarter gave the Hawks a 14 point lead at quarter time.

In the second term the Tigers were at their competitive best. For the majority of the quarter the Tigers tackled and pressured the Hawks. Davina ‘D’ Harris went down back and showed how to be first for the ball. Tegan was moved onto one of the Hawks prime movers and stopped her output through her running, tackling and harassing. Katie Newton gave a great contest out manned across the half forward line and Jane Vucago and Sarah Van Meurs were tireless on the wings however it was down back where the Tigers really shined. Rach ‘Shorty’ Short, playing against her old team, was outstanding at full back suffering leather poisoning late in the term. Amanda Oosterwergel showed her performance against Riverina was no fluke showing great determination in the back pocket. Chrissie Bourbous and Kristen ‘Kritta’ Turner also gave great rebound and run from half back. But each time the Tigers switched off they were punished and the Hawks three goals for the term came from a misjudged marking contest, Tess having busted her gut to tag one of the Hawks best been unable to run with her and a simple unmanned player at a ball up 20m out from goal. The margin at half time was 33 points.

In what is becoming a first year tradition the Tigers again saved their best for the third quarter. After some desperate defence, again led by Shorty, the ball managed to move into the forward line where the Tigers forwards showed real desperation locking into the forward line. Hannah Dunn, again asked to ruck non-stop all day, knocked it down to Siau Goh who was able to get boot to ball and kick truly, her first career goal and a great reward for Siau’s work ethic this season. For the rest of the term the midfield and defenders held firm Tegan close to best on ground continuing laying tackles and breaking up play with Kritta not far behind her. Late in the term Sarah Crowe took a fantastic mark on the last line of Defence and was able to find Amanda with a neat pass just before the siren sounded to end the term. In the third quarter the Tigers, playing in their first season, had held the team that has won three of the last six premierships goalless to win the term by three points and reduce the margin at three quarter time to an even 5 goals.

Kicking against the breeze and up the hill in the final term was always going to be tough, however the Tigers stayed competitive. Te Ani Lusk Waititi was moved back and had the Hawks forwards knowing they were in a game. Dani Louis held firm at centre half back and ex Tuggeranong players Jacinta Froud and D also pushed back hard to help the backline. Tegan, Shorty and Amanda continued to put pressure on the Hawks however the Hawks were able to break the shackles a little kicking three goals in the last five minutes to blow the final margin out to 57 points.

Despite another loss the Tigers continue to show tremendous improvement and a great team spirit. The Tigers will be able to have a short break with the bye next weekend before their final home game for the season taking on the Gungahlin Jets (11am Sat 31 July at Town Park) and hoping to turn around the 12 point loss from the opening round.

Tigers Under 18 Grade player Brendan Hague makes a welcome return to the playing field on Saturday morning against Belconnen at Manuka Oval. ‘Hague” was seriously injured in a car accident earlier this season and placed in intensive care for some time. Doctors advised the youngster that he may never play football again after suffering serious internal injuries.

However a remarkable recovery, a clearance from the Doctors and a few weeks on the training track has given Coach Paul Campbell an opportunity to play this quality football in an all important match against the Magpies this weekend.

Welcome back Brendan!!

Suspensions handed out on two Tigers.

The Tigers will be minus two players from last weekends win over Ainslie when they take on last years Premiers Belconnen at Manuka Oval in all three grades on Saturday.

The AFL Canberra Tribunal has handed out one match suspensions to Neil Irwin and Jason Satchell. Both players were reported in the first quarter for indiscretions. The Tigers appealed the decision on Jason Satchell after new video evidence was produced but the AFL Canberra Appeals Board would not allow the new evidence to be presented at the hearing on Thursday night and in doing so enforced the one match suspension.

This game is an all important one for the 1st Grade team. The Tigers remain out of the four on percentage and with only 5 games remaining before the finals, they will probably have to win three of their games to qualify.

The Reserve Grade match will also be an important game as a top two spot is on the line. The Magpies lost their first game of the season last week against the other top two contender Eastlake. With a couple of players unavailable for the Tigers plus the above mentioned suspensions in first grade, the Tigers will have to be at their best to win this encounter.

The Under 18 Grade game between the Tigers and Magpies should be a beauty based on their last clash at DFP in a deferred night game. Our youngsters are second on the ladder and need to keep on winning to maintain a top two position.

The Ladies team travel to Kambah on Sunday to take on Tuggeranong with Coach Dave Matthews having mixed feelings about this game. Not only did Dave Coach the Hawks to a premiership some years ago, but his wife still plays for them. There could be a few fireworks in the Matthews household this weekend !.

FIRST GRADE

The Tigers made a welcome return to the winners list with a well deserved and spirited victory over Ainslie at Dairy Farmers Park last Sunday. A loss would have placed them a game plus percentage out of the four after the upset win by Eastlake over Belconnen the previous day. As it stands the Sydney Swans Reserves are well clear on top of the table with only 6 points separating Ainslie (2nd), Belconnen (3rd), Eastlake and the Tigers who are both on equal points in 4th.

Over night rain made for a slippery surface particularly for the earlier games but there were clear skies for the main match. There were a number of “scuffles” during the first quarter as both teams tried to assert there authority on the match. The result was two reports for the Tigers – the first in any grade this season. Neil Irwin and Jason Satchell with face the tribunal on Tuesday evening as a result of indiscretions during the opening term.

The Tigers took a two goal lead into the quarter time break and gradually increased the lead to 33 points by the main break. They played with a lot more endeavour, enthusiasm and commitment to the ball with more direct passages of play during the first half. Although moving towards old habits in the third quarter they were able to increase their lead by three quarter time albeit by the barest of margins – 1 point. By the end of the game the Tigers had posted a strong victory 11.10 (76) to 6.15 (51).

The win was encouraging for the Tigers who went into the match with five changes from the previous week including the absence of ruck-man Jordan Longmore and on baller Andrew Lieschke through injury. Kris Thompson and James Manie were unavailable while Brett Fruend had a run in the earlier match picking up a best on ground performance.

Captain Ryan Quade was outstanding in the ruck and he along with Todd Dickinson, James Kavanagh, Billy Neely, Tim Cook and Matt Liddle were great contributors during the game.

Undoubtedly a feature of the match was the awarding of the MUIR Medal for the player adjudged Best on Ground announced by Ainslie President Ian Muir and presented by Tigers Chairman Bob Gibbs. This year the award went to the Tigers Andrew Swan. He is the youngest ever recipient of the medal and deservedly won the honour after a fantastic display from the half back line.

The Tigers Reserve Grade went into their encounter with the Tricolours very much undermanned. However no-one would have predicted the opening start to the game whereby the Tigers young guns came out firing and posted five goals before quarter time. The inaccurate Ainslie combination had ten scoring shots for no majors by half time. They had ample opportunities to peg the Tigers back but couldn’t’t post a major score.

At the other end of the park the Tigers were well served in the goal kicking area with the elusive Brett Fruend regaining some much needed game time adding 4 goals to his tally for the year. The elusive and laconic Brendan Ward chimed in with 3 as did Daniel Jabornik.

The goal of the year (and possible ever) at DFP came from the boot of Liam Wilkinson who slotted an absolute gem from the boundary in front of the Growlers deck. It was great to see Sean Kelly in form (his Mum was in attendance) and that of Michael Moss and Brett Ormston .

Under 18 Grade

This was always going to be a close encounter. It was matched by the quality and high standard with the Tricolours coming out in front in what was a top of the table clash. Nothing much separated the two teams throughout the game. A last minute goal to the away team in the final quarter made the difference 15 points – but prior to that – the game was in the balance.

Shannon Winmar was active up forward posting 3 goals. Jack Bowyer was equally active in defence and on ball with his strong ground work a feature of his play. The Tigers have a rock in defence with Sean Van Holland. He rarely makes an error and looks set for a promising career with the Tigers Club.

While not pleased to lose the Club acknowledges the efforts of Brady Scholes and Jordan Flanagan who are grandsons of the late and great former Tigers legend Alan Muir. Brady and Jordan are both members of the Ainslie Football Club Under 18 Grade team and were in attendance at the club at the presentation of the MUIR Medal.
Best:	Kristen Turner, Davina Harris, Te Ani Lusk Waititi, Dani Lewis, Amanda Oosterwergen

The Queanbeyan Tigers were much more competitive at home against Riverina on Saturday with only an abysmal second quarter performance spoiling what was otherwise a very good team effort.
Early in the first term the Tigers were second to the footy, giving away careless free kicks and getting sucked into the contest, despite pre-game instructions allowing the talented Riverina team plenty of space to run and use the ball. The highlight for the Tigers were the sensational efforts of Kristen ‘Kritta’ Turner off half back flank who threw herself into contest after contest repelling the Riverina forward thrusts time and again. Unfortunately there were not enough following her lead and a lack of desperation helped Riverina kick three early goals.

Towards the end of the quarter the Tigers started to play better and had two great chances to score however both very gettable set shots sailed wide of the mark.
The second term was the Tigers worst for the season. Save for Kritta, Te Ani Lusk Waititi ‘T’ (returning after a long break with shoulder injury) and Amanda Oosterwergen the Tigers were non-competitive failing to run, talk or compete. Basic skill errors also hurt the team, who were again constantly second to the ball. The result was a 10 goal deficit at half time and an almost silent change room.

Challenged at half time to make something out of the day the Tigers produced a great third quarter, something they are starting to make a habit out of. The Tigers were starting to get first to the ball and as a result started to get the benefit of the 50/50 decisions with skipper Jacinta Froud and Jane Vucago prominent. Dani Lewis was sent down back to shore up the defence and showed the kind of desperation required to help hold the Riverina team goalless for the term. Even better after some sustained forward pressure the Tigers forward Sarah Crowe copped a high tackle and was rewarded with a free kick which she truly converted for her first career goal. The Tigers missed a couple of other opportunities to score, but still managed to win the term by 4 points.

The final term started with the Tigers again giving away a simple free kick and failing to contest well enough in the air and conceding a quick goal. However the Tigers fought back and T gave the Tigers supporters one of the highlights of the year, taking a real ‘speckie’ on half forward. Shortly afterward Michelle Hansen took a solid mark and found Amy McLenaghan ten metres out from goal on a slight angle.

Despite a dozen or so Riverina players standing the mark Amy kicked truly and became the second Tiger on the day to register her first career goal. The Tigers kept battling out the quarter providing a much more determined contest before Riverina finally ran out winners by 70 points, a massive 63 point improvement on the week before against the same opponents.

The challenge for the Tigers is now to try and produce a four quarter effort and not save their best for after their worst, when the game is already gone and the opposition has arguably switched off. The challenge next week is again a tough one taking on the reigning premier Tuggeranong at Kambah next Sunday 18 July at 12 noon.

At the end of June this year the Queanbeyan Tigers Senior and Junior Clubs sponsored three of it’s Armstrong Academy players to attend the Western Bulldogs Academy which was held over two days at the Mission Elite Training Centre Whitton Oval, Melbourne.

Young Guns Sam Jensen, Jack Bowyer and James Armstrong were shown what it is like to be an AFL player and areas they need to improve in to become a better player. During the two days they were addressed by Senior Coach Rodney Eade, Bulldogs Star Daniel Cross, Bulldogs Recruitment Manager Simon Dalrymple and many of the Bulldogs Training and Fitness staff.

The boys were also taken out to the Victorian University and put through the same testing that is conducted at the AFL Draft Camp every year. They also trained on the hallowed turf of the legendary Whitton Oval, Footscray.

Former Tigers player Brett Daniher who now works full time for the Western Bulldogs is to be thanked for providing the Tigers with the opportunity to be able to send some of our future stars down to experience the world of an AFL Club.

This association will continue as the Queanbeyan Tigers have already committed to three places in next years Bulldogs Academy. These players will be selected from the 2010/11 Armstrong Academy Program.

Mitch Daniher to play 100th 1st Grade match

Queanbeyan’s prolific onballer Mitch Daniher will record his 100th 1st Grade this Sunday at Dairy Farmers Park when the Tigers take on Ainslie.

The match is deemed as one of the most important of the year with the Tigers reeling after winning just one match from the past seven. They are now in serious danger of missing the four if further losses occur.

But Sunday is an all important occasion for the like able 25 year old who joined the Club from Turvey Park in 2005 and has since won three First Grade Best and Fairest Awards along with a Mulrooney Medal of which he tied with two others in 2009.

His ability to win the hard ball in tight situation has drawn respect from all areas of AFL Canberra and with the Tigers season on the line on Sunday nothing than a best on ground will be acceptable from one of the best players to have donned the black and gold.

Mitch Daniher Player Profile:
•	Age 25
•	Joins Tigers from Turvey Park in 2005

MUIR Medal

Sundays match between arch rivals Ainslie and Queanbeyan is also the occasion whereby the best on ground will receive the MUIR Medal; the Medal being struck in 2006 to recognise the valuable contribution of Alan Muir and his son Ian to their respective clubs.
The late Alan Muir served the Tigers for over 60 years in various capacities including the playing of 225 1st Grade games. Son Ian is the current President of Ainslie and also played over 200 1st Grade games but with the Ainslie Football Club.

FIRST GRADE

Simply woeful - are the only words that can describe such an inept performance by the Tigers 1st Grade team last Saturday against Eastlake.

Had the Tigers won they could have almost sealed a finals berth. As it stands they will be flat out staying off the bottom of the ladder – a position they have not held since the dim dark days of the early seventies – 1971 in fact !!!

The Tigers knew the ramifications the result would bring and the reason such emphasis was placed on the match after a disappointing game against the Swans Reserves the previous week.

They looked sluggish, they looked slow and they looked as if they wanted to rack up individual statistics such was the overuse of handball, short kicks and indirect play into their forward line.

The less said the better.

The Tigers plight won’t be made any easier against Ainslie this Sunday at Dairy Farmers Park. The Tricolours are placed in second position and travelling quite nicely after a few early season hiccups.
Other than the effort of Bill Neely and the superb effort of James Kavanagh at CHF there were few other Tigers worthy of a mention in a dismal 58 point thrashing.

RESERVE GRADE

The Tigers and Eastlake were equal on competition points in second position before last weeks match even though the Tigers had suffered two losses to the Demons this year. The game was always going to be of a high standard and that it was.

From the outset both teams displayed a keenness to win the hard ball and two early goals to the Demons set the tone for an interesting match throughout. The same old names keep popping up as strong contributors each week but to the credit of all who took the field the 4 point victory was a fantastic win over quality opposition from a complete team effort however 50m penalties marred the match.

The Demons have a game in hand against Tuggeranong being the postponed washed out match a month ago. It is imperative the Tigers focus each week on upcoming games if they are secure a top two berth and a double chance in the finals.

Under 18 Grade

Manuka Oval was significantly wet and add an early morning fog resulted in freezing conditions for the youngsters. It took most of the first quarter for the players to finally adapt to the conditions but once they did they took control over an opposition lacking numbers on the bench.

There were some standout performances: Andrew Swan – returning from a stint in the seniors dominated. It won’t be long before he is back in the 1st Grade team. Ryan Price showed his pace and ability to break the packs giving the forward line heaps of opportunities. Dale Dickinson and Jake Robinson form a are powerful ruck due and are excellent around the ground.

In fairness to the rest of the team it was fantastic to see a couple of players who rarely receive a mention gain valuable on field time. Mitchell Theunissen posted three important goals and once he develops physically will be an important cog in this team in future years. Lachlan Dowling is another who enjoyed his time – his pace being a distinct advantage. James Murphy, Dean Solway and Jack Bowyer have all been strong contributors in recent games.

Round 8 v Riverina @ McPherson Oval, Wagga Wagga 3 Jul 10

QUEANBEYAN	0.0	0.0	0.0	0.0 (0)

Best:	Bobbie Minniecon, Fran Langi, Pip Butt, Jacinta Froud, Sarah Van Meurs, Gen Fleeton

The first road trip to Wagga proved to be a very tough learning experience for the Queanbeyan Tigers women. Although the team had suffered from injuries and illness to key players prior to the match it was still a disappointing effort, particularly in the first half.

From the opening bounce the Riverina team dominated the centre square clearances and provided their forwards with clean ball. The effort and contesting that the Tigers have prided themselves on all season just wasn’t there consistently enough although there were several reasonable individual efforts with Bobbie Minnecon playing well in Defence before being moved up the ground and Fran Langi and Gen Fleeton trying hard in the key defensive posts.

To the Tigers credit they put on a much improved performance after the half time break with Pip Butt doing well having been thrown into the ruck, Sarah Van Meurs finding plenty of the ball and skipper Jacinta Froud trying to lead the way as usual. The backline also held firm and restricted the Riverina team to a credible two goals in the third term.

The start of the final quarter saw the Tigers best passage for the day. Gen won a one-on-one contest at full back and released to Siau Goh who found Sarah V on the hard lead. Sarah found Jane Vucago in the middle of the ground who in turn hit the skipper up with a precise pass. Jacinta found Katie Newton across half forward but unfortunately the passage broke down and for the rest of the term normal transmission was resumed as the Tigers tried hard but the Riverina team were able to find ways to score, particular from stoppages.

After the long bus trip home, the team did manage to have a win on the weekend taking out the Karaoke Challenge in fine style, demonstrating that despite the hard slog on the field this season the team is sticking together off the field which bodes well for the rest of the season and beyond.

A quick thanks to all the support staff who helped get the team to Wagga Wagga and back safely. Thanks to Nick for driving the bus, Mark for travelling down to serve both as goal umpire, and then drinks waiter on the way home and of course Joan and Judy who continue to give great support to the team as Manager and Sports Trainer. And can’t leave out Jonesy who did a great job in the fluro green of the team runner and arguably an even better job in the short black dress later at the Tigers Club.

Ina quirk of the draw the Tigers take on the Riverina team in the next round, this time hosting at Queanbeyan Town Park at 11am on Saturday where they’ll be keen to put up a more competitive performance.
