Football Club
Do these two characters remind you of anyone!
They just happen to be our next generation of youngsters coming through the ranks – but if they have the talent of their respective dads, they will also be Champions for the Club.
Jack Armstrong and Jordan Gilbert have commenced with the Tigers in the Auskick Pro Competition and are obviously enjoying their time as best mates at the moment.
Jack is the son of current Senior Playing Coach and 300 game Tiger Champion Mark Armstrong. He has a very cheeky smile, one that he will use often when he starts talking future contracts with Chook (just like his dad did for many years).
Jordan Gilbert is the son of former Tiger Champion and Hard Nut Jason Gilbert. Chook has already signed him to play senior footy with the Tigers along with his younger brother Bailee. They both signed on the dotted line on a coaster when visiting the Tigers licensed Club with parents Jason and Sylvania one evening.
Asked what numbers they would like to play in when they reach senior grade level the surprise answer was Number 8 for Jordo with Bailee deciding on his Dads Number 7.
With the Tigers GM having a long history with both families and having seen how good their dads were in Tigers colours he is pleased to see the budding young champions playing at such a young age.
There is no doubt that when Chook adds Jack’s signature to that same coaster he will put it away in a safe place knowing full well the scouts would be out and about to snap up such a pedigree of players!
It has been described as one of the busiest weekends of Tigers Footy this year! Please see below what promises to be a great weekend:
Neely to Play 100th 1st Grade Match with Tigers.
A highlight of Sundays clash with the Eastlake Demons at Manuka Oval will be the 100th 1st Grade appearance of Billy Neely. It has taken him 8 years to play the final five matches to reach the ton but no one will be more pleased than Bill.
A former premiership player and best and fairest of the club, Bill returned to the Tigers this season after a journey that has seen him win best and fairest awards at Glenelg (2), Ainslie and Lavington in what can only be described as an illustrious career in our great game. Congratulations Billy.
He will be suitably recognised at the Tigers 100 Club Function.
The 2010 AFL Canberra competition is wide open at the moment.
Eastlake have been of the verge of winning some close matches but have registered only one win from 5 thus far. They have tested the Sydney Swans Reserves in Sydney failing by 7 points against a quality team and thrashed Ainslie to record a solid win in Round 2.
Mitch Heaslip will miss the match through injury but the return of Paul Franchi and Roy Jaques will have a positive influence on the team.
Sundays clash is all important to both Clubs in all three grades.
The Tigers Under 18 Grade team take on the Demons on SATURDAY at Dairy Farmers Park. (The change in the game day is to coincide with the visit of Fremantle Dockers star Matthew Pavlich who will put the Tigers Armstrong Academy through a coaching clinic between the hours of 12 noon and 1.00pm on Sunday. The day commences at 11.00am)
The Under 18 Grade team had a comfortable win over the Demons in the opening match of the season but will need to be at their absolute best on Saturday to overcome an improving Demons combination. The match starts at the usual time of 9.30am.
The Reserves have struggled each week since the opening round to have a consistent team on the paddock. Sunday will be no different with a number of players unavailable but will welcome the return of some experienced players that provide the team with a solid combination. They lost their opening encounter of the season to the Demons and will be out to rectify that loss in a game that commences at 11.30am
The Tigers Ladies team take on the might of Ainslie on Saturday at the Queanbeyan Park Oval in their first ever home match. This game commences at 11.00am. This is the Ladies second game “ever”and if they show the improvement in this match as they did in their first round encounter they will certainly give a good account of themselves.
It’s a busy weekend for the Tigers Club:
Saturday:
9.30am Under 18 Grade – Tigers v Eastlake Demons at Dairy Farmers Park
11.00am Ladies v Ainslie at Queanbeyan Park
Sunday:
11.00am Tigers Junior Gala Day at Dairy Farmers Park including Matthew Pavlich Coaching Clinic from 12 Noon
11.30am Tigers Reserve Grade v Eastlake at Manuka Oval
2.00pm Tigers 1st Grade v Eastlake at Manuka Oval.
Dairy Farmers Park looked a picture last Sunday with glorious conditions prevailing throughout the day for all three matches against Ainslie. The Tigers PINK Day at the Footy drew a respectable crowd considering Mothers Day activities would have taken precedence for many spectators.
The Club dressed in PINK for the day with many activities featured around providing awareness of the Breast Cancer Foundation.
Under 18 Grade
In perfect conditions the Tigers Under 18 Grade team took the field to do battle with competition leaders Ainslie who where undefeated. In a tight contest, the young Tigers combination played some outstanding football posting 4 goals in the final term to take a well deserved victory over the Tricolours.
There were many outstanding performances in a tremendous team performance. This included determined efforts by Jake Oram, Andrew Swan, Jake Robinson, Sam Jensen , Jordan Eagle, Ryan Price, Mitchel Theunissen and Taylor Lee.

Reserve Grade
The Tigers Reserve Grade took a hammering on the playing field from a very physical Ainslie combination that threw everything at the home team in a tight contest. With no bench just after half time, the effort by the Tigers gained high praise from the Coaching staff.
Many players were well worn by the final siren commenting on the unusual warm conditions and the intensity of the game. The Tigers lost the their most experienced players within five minutes into the third term with Dennis Quade, Greg Hair, Chris Walmsley and Chris Davis all sidelined with injury. It was up to the youngsters to win the game and that they did with enormous commitment.
The Tigers welcomed back Brett Ormston after a year playing Rugby League and he will be better for the run !

1st Grade
It could have been an outstanding day. Wins in all three grades at Dairy Farmers Park.
The stakes were high for the Tigers with a shared position on top of the ladder on offer if they defeated Ainslie after the Sydney Swans Reserves dropped their first game of the season to Tuggeranong Hawks the previous day.
At half time it looked like the Tigers would achieve that goal with a 35 point lead after posting 7 goals without reply in the second quarter. It was not to be. Two goals in the first few minutes of the third term to the Tricolours and they were back in the match. It was a struggle throughout the last half and came down to the time on period of the final quarter before Ainslie wrestled the lead back from the Tigers to take the game by 16 points.
The disappointment of the day was not lost on the players in the change rooms after the game. To make matters worse, the Tigers were told that their “pinch hit” ruck-man Mitch Heaslip had suffered a broken collarbone, an injury suffered early in the third term.
There were few positives to take from the match. The performance of Tim Cook, Captain Ryan Quade and 4 majors to goal sneak Brett Fruend being a feature. Mention must be made of the “speckie” by Jackson Brooker.

First Grade
The Tigers went into the main game of the afternoon without three “hard nut” players from last week’s team. Jason Satchell (broken shoulder), Neil Irwin (leg) and Kris Thompson (unavailable) were all missing.
The return of James Kavanagh added height and pace to the Tigers forward line and his five goals early in the match provided the Tigers with plenty of advantage against a youthful Hawks team. Once “Kav” was quietened the other twin tower Mark Armstrong stood tall posting 8 goals. Todd Dickinson played his best game for the Tigers as did newcomer James Nancarrow.

Welcome back Paul Briedis. For a guy who hasn’t touched a Sherrin since last September he certainly didn’t lack any ball skills or fitness. A four month overseas trip has done little to add to his waist line.
His other travel days from Sydney to Canberra each weekend are also over after completing five years at University. It’s that type of dedication that will see him press for the Senior Grade selection now that he can train with the Club.
Captain Quade was again inspiration as was last years B & F Greg Hair. Sam Daniel receives another mention for his best on ground performance.

A six goal haul at full forward by Taylor Lee paved the way for the Tigers solid win in the Under 18 Grade game. After being off target the previous week, he made amends against the Hawks playing a solid game in front of goals.
Jordan Eagle missed the previous week’s loss to the Magpies but also made amends with a solid all round game. Zac Bowden also gains a mention for his game against the Hawks. The Tigers are second on the ladder at the moment with a top of the table clash against Ainslie this Sunday at Dairy Farmers Park.

What goes around comes around. It’s an old cliche but never could it be truer than last Saturday afternoon at around 4.30pm when the final siren sounded with the scoreboard reading Queanbeyan 17.8 (110) Belconnen 9.11 (65).
It’s been a long time between drinks but some would say its been worth the wait. Others would disagree but nothing anyone could say could wipe the smiles off the faces of the players and officials in the change rooms after the game.
Victory is so sweet but non more so than against opposition that seemingly have the “wood” on you.
The Tigers emphatic win against last years Premiers was spearheaded by veteran coach / player Mark Armstrong. His 6 goals were absolute gems.
Three of those were in the first quarter and “marked” a return to his glory days as one of the best ever players to have graced the playing fields in the AFL Canberra competition.
The Growlers Deck roared with approval throughout the afternoon as the Tigers piled on the goals to take a 39 point advantage going into the last quarter. Even though kicking against an estimated five goal wind they were still able to maintain composure and increase their ¾ time lead to 45 point victors.
The only sour point being the injury to youngster Jason Satchell – a member of the Tigers leadership group as he suffered unfortunate shoulder injury that will have him sidelined for 6 to 8 weeks.

Reserve Grade
The Tigers Reserve Grade team was decimated by the unavailability of 7 players from the previous week and suffered accordingly.
But the effort of those who donned the black and gold cannot be underestimated. They were gallant in defeat and went down fighting in a close encounter.
Despite the slow start to the year the form of youngsters Sam Daniel and Michael Moss has been very pleasing to the Tigers coaching staff. Tom Hollis is playing excellent football as well.
Other good signs that the Reserves can turn around their season is the improved form of Ben Jabornik, Tim Hannan and stalwarts Beau Watts, Hayden Kelly and Jared Daniel.

Under 18 Grade
The Under 18 Grade team played Marist in the opening match in perfect conditions. It was one of the best displays by a Tigers Under 18 Grade team for quite some time with all players contributing in a high standard match.
Two Under 18 Grade players – Ryan Price and Andrew Swan gained selection in the 1st Grade team against the Swans and did not disappoint. Their youthful endeavour argues well for further selection during the year.
No doubt a couple of youngsters may be given the opportunity to travel with the team to Sydney when the Tigers 1st Grade team play the Swans at the SCG and ANZ stadium during the year as curtain raiser matches to Collingwood and Hawthorn matches.

The main match of the afternoon provided spectators with a high quality contest with the opposition fairly bristling with AFL players. The Swans included Paul Bevan, Ted Richards, Ed Barlow and Henry Playfair to name a few along with a host of newcomers drafted over the summer.
They did not disappoint but full credit to the Tigers team for their efforts.
It was a gutsy performance by a youthful Tigers combination missing a few experienced players which included off season recruit Bill Neely who suffered an injury against Eastlake the week prior. The 21 point loss to the early season flag favourites argues well for the Tigers who take on Premiers Belconnen Magpies this Saturday at Dairy Farmers Park.

Tigers Home in a Classic!!
A respectable crowd was in attendance to witness the opening round of the AFL Canberra Season between Queanbeyan and Eastlake at Dairy Farmers Park last Sunday.
It could never be described as a spectacle in terms of quality but it certainly didn’t lack excitement, and it certainly didn’t lack endeavour by either team.
The match was played in extreme windy conditions which seemed to favour the southern end of the ground but at times blew across the ground making it very difficult for quality football.
Kicking with the wind in the opening term, the Tigers failed to capitalize on many forward fifty movements. They were thwarted by a determined Eastlake back-line.
They led by a small margin at quarter time after the Demons posted two late goals. This should of provided Eastlake with opportunity to build a comfortable lead when kicking with the wind in the second quarter. It was not to be.
It was a dour struggle throughout the match and came down to a final quarter hit out between two desperate teams. Two goals in the time on period of the last quarter to Paul Salter and Mark Armstrong gave the Tigers an 18 point victory. Slater provided a spark in the last quarter up forward with his pace and unpredictable play.
Throughout the match James Kavanagh dominated across half forward. He missed a few opportunities to post goals but still managed four – one a beauty in the second quarter against the wind. Ryan Quade stood tall as Captain and led his charges with a commanding game whether up forward or in defence.
Few could value the importance of new players to the Club this year in Billy Neely and Toby Conroy. Both displayed quality disposals and knowledge of the game in tight situations. Add the dynamic Mitch Daniher and you have a trio of ‘excellence for an on ball division. Outstanding youngster Will Griggs continues to thrill the crowds with his uncanny ability to get out of trouble in tight situations.
The Tigers welcomed back Todd Dickinson late last week after a pre season with SANFL Club Glenelg. His return and immediate inclusion into the team in addition to Kaine Stevens (who had a free weekend from his GWS commitments) made up for the absence of Tim Cook and Kris Thompson who were both unavailable for the game.
It would be remiss not to mention the work of Jordan Longmore in the ruck and his back up Mitch Heaslip. They both performed creditably throughout the match.

Reserve Grade
The Tigers unveiled their Reserve Grade Premiership flag of 2009 but it was not enough to spur the team to victory over a committed Demons team. Eastlake took a commanding lead by half time and held onto post a 26 point victory.
The Tigers resembled little of the premiership team with only 7 players featuring from that victory but they still had some quality players in attendance albeit a few who had not been able to train until recently due to other commitments. One of those was Michael Wescombe – whose return to the track after an appearance in the local cricket grand final – netted him four goals for the day. It won’t be long before he his pressing for a senior grade spot.
Welcome back Tom Hollis and Brendan Ward. Both players have missed the last two seasons due to overseas journeys but they certainly haven’t lost the ability to play the game. They will also press for senior grade selection as the year unfolds. Youngsters Michael Moss and Sean Kelly played strongly throughout along with Captain courageous Dennis Quade.

Under 18 Grade
The Tigers Under 18 Grade kicked off the day with an impressive win over Eastlake. The Demons where struggling to field a team this year but mustered up a group of very committed players who never stopped trying all day.
Peter Jensen and Scott Taylor took control of the team in the absence of Coach Paul Campbell who married the previous day. They were suitably impressed with the determination in tight situations. Andrew Swan dominated yet again.
The “old stages” Taylor Lee (4 goals) and Ryan price (2 goals) provided the necessary spark when required. Jake Oram is unstoppable on his day and will no doubt play at a higher level in the not too distant future. Jordan Eagle, Sean Van Holland and Cameron Cobby are also impressive youngsters at this level.

Ladies Team.
The Ladies played in the AFL Canberra Women’s in the Pre season NAB Challenge and although losing their three matches had a great day out and look forward to the opening of the season in May.
A loyal group of supporters worked tirelessly during last Wednesday in preparation for an onslaught of hungry footballers after training. Approx 120 players and officials were greeted with a magnificent roast spit kindly supplied and cooked by Wally Thompson and Darryl Jenkins.
Support during the afternoon was also provided by Di McGinley, Mark Lindbeck, Judy Mustard and Ray Daniel.
Even members of the new ladies team (who trained at the Queanbeyan Park) travelled to Dairy Farmers Park to taste the culinary delights of our “Master Chefs”. Wally and Darryl have provided this opportunity to the footballers for many years. It is greatly appreciated. Our thanks and appreciation is extended to those who assisted during the day and evening.
The evening is also an opportunity to provide all the players with their kits bags for each season.
Tigers Unveil Premiership Flag
The Tigers successful 2009 Reserve Grade Premiership Coach Adrian Pavese, his Assistant Rohan Langford and Captain Dennis Quade raised the flag last Sunday prior to the Reserve Grade fixture match against last years Grand Finalist team Eastlake Demons at Dairy Farmers Park.
The 2009 Reserve Grade Premiership team was the youngest ever fielded by the Tigers Club with five of those players (Paul Franchi, Jackson Brooker, James Manie, Brett Fruend and Chris Haddock) representing the Club in 1st Grade last Sunday against Eastlake.
Tigers to take on a Stronger Swans Outfit.
Twelve months ago the Sydney Swans Reserves were struggling big time.
After four consecutive Premierships (three of which were undefeated seasons), they commenced 2009 with a host of players unavailable at both senior and reserve grade level. Add the retirement of a couple of experienced players meant they were relying on top up players all season. They won only one of their first three encounters last year and looked a very vulnerable team for most of the year.
The Swans missed the finals for the first time since they entered the competition in 2003.
Role on 12 months – they look a completely different team. Their 11 goal win over reigning Premiers Belconnen in the opening round of the season last weekend has sent alarm bells ringing around the League.
The inclusion of a new group of draft picks plus the majority of their listed players being available for selection will mean a star studded Swans Reserves team visiting Dairy Farmers Park this Sunday for the second round clash against the Tigers.
The Tigers are expecting to name an unchanged line-up to that which defeated Eastlake last Sunday with the exception of Kaine Stevens who returns to the GWS team for a lengthy period. A couple of injury concerns will also be addressed at training on Friday night.
Teams are allowed an additional two players for clashes against the Swans. This will allow for the selection of Kris Thompson and Tim Cook who missed last weeks game due to unavailability.
Spectators will witness the likes of seasoned AFL players for the Swans in Ed Barlow, Ted Richards, Paul Bevan, Henry Playfair, Matt O’Dwyer, Nick Smith and Patrick Veszpremi – to name a few.
The Tigers Reserve Grade team play newcomers Gungahlin Jets in the curtain raiser match at 11.30am. The Jets are coached by former Tigers Conditioner Todd Pulford and have ex Tigers DJ Walker and Jack Foster on their playing list.
The Under 18 Grade clash between Marist and the Tigers should be a beauty. Marist has won the last two premierships in this grade. They look on track for another strong season after comfortably defeating their grand final counterparts Belconnen last week. The Tigers have many second year Under 18 grade players in their line up adding experience to the team.

Senior Tigers Leaders for 2010 - Matt Liddle, Dennis Quade, Neil Irwin, Roy Jaques, Captain Ryan Quade, Toby Conroy, Mitch Daniher & Jason Satchell.
Announcement of Captains and Leadership Groups
The Tigers Pre-Season campaign was completed after the final trial game with the announcement of Team Captains and Leadership Groups.
Approx 200 players and supporters attended the after match function at the Licensed Club at which Ryan Quade was announced as Captain of the Club – a position he has held in a Co Captain capacity with Rene Ioppi for the past three seasons.
Off season knee surgery to Ioppi (who is not expected to return to the field until mid season) was taken into consideration when the leaders for 2010 were voted on by the players at the player’s camp.
Ryan Quade’s appointment along with the naming of the following Leadership Group for the Senior playing list was greeted with enthusiasm:
Roy Jaques, Dennis Quade, Toby Conroy, Mitch Daniher, Matt Liddle, Neil Irwin, James Kavanagh and Jason Satchell will provide a very young playing list a wealth of experience.
The Tigers Reserve Grade Squad will be led by veteran Dennis Quade who enters his 17th season with the Club. Greg Hair has been selected as his deputy.
The Under 18 Grade Leadership Group is Jake Oram, Andrew Swan, Taylor Lee and Cameron Cobby with Andrew Swan being elected as Captain.
The Ladies Group (Tigerettes) has Jacinta Froud, Kristen Turner, Francis Langi and Danielle Lewis with Jacinta Froud being named Captain.
The evening welcomed the participants of the new Ladies team and in particular there Coach David Matthews along with his assistant Keith and Team Manager Joan Vosnakes.
Also welcomed were the many new faces in the Tigers team list this year including Billy Neely, James Nancarrow, Mitch Heaslip Casey Walsh, Tim Hannan, Toby Conroy, Michael Moss, Liam Wilkinson, Liam Walker Eastick, Simon Mackie, Andrew Regan, Ben Foley, Sean Van Holland and Jordan Eagle.
The AFL Canberra 2010 Season commences this weekend with last years Premiers Belconnen up against the Sydney Swans Reserves in Sydney as the curtain raiser match to the Swans / Richmond AFL encounter.
The Swans Reserves missed the finals for the first time in 2009 but look the team to beat this year. An influx of newcomers to replace an aging list of Swans senior players will be of great benefit for the Sydneysiders. The Magpies have lost a number of key players but have added quality players to their list including Ryan Underwood returning after a year interstate and AFL Sydney Representative player Sam Rutland. A couple of unknowns are also joining the northerners from the SANFL according to the transfer of players into AFL Canberra.
2009 Grand Finalist Ainslie will unveil their star recruit Robert Shirley – a 200 game player with the Adelaide Crows when they take on Tuggeranong at Greenway Oval on Saturday. Although little is known about other players joining the Tricolours they are sure to have toped up their playing list to cover the loss of 2008 Mulrooney Medallist Ryan Lewis and former SANFL player John Pratt. The Hawks have lost a couple of quality players to Queensland and will rely once again on a strong group of locals moving through the ranks.
The Tigers play Eastlake at Dairy Farmers Park on Sunday in all three grades. Eastlake will also unveil former AFL player in ruckman Ray Hall – who played for the NSW ACT RAMS team before joining the Richmond Tigers. Their losses have been significant but the Demons new Coach Daniel Archer has searched far and wide across Sydney and NSW for new recruits and they are sure to be a competitive outfit come Sunday.
The home team at Dairy Farmers Park on Sunday will be a competitive combination with a number of new faces likely to start in the first grade team covering the losses of Mark Powell (North Shore), Roy Jaques (injured – Round 3), Luke Whatman (Victor Harbour), Kaine Stevens (Team GWS), Andrew Lieschke (injured – unknown), Renee Ioppi (injured – mid season), Jeremy Kirkwood (Injured – unknown) and Scott Dickinson (injured – season).
Newcomers in Season 2010 will include Toby Conroy, Bill Neely, James Nancarrow, Liam Wilkinson and Mitch Heaslip. Ryan Quade has been appointed Captain for 2010, a position he held alongside Renee Ioppi for the past three seasons. His form in preseason matches indicates a strong and rewarding year for this 100 1st Grade game player.

Under the guidance of all the Tigers Coaching staff but in particular Paul Campbell and Adrian Pavese, the players have been involved in various activities including weight training, fitness levels, Ball skills and life management.
There is an impressive amount of talent currently at the Tigers Club with the current Generation “T” being the backbone of future senior grade teams.
The age group of the Armstrong Academy targets players from the Tigers & St Edmund’s Under 16 Grade teams through to the Tigers Under 18 Grade players.
Congratulations to all who participated in particular those who attend every session.
Thanks also to the Coaches involved: Mark Armstrong, Adrian Pavese, Paul Campbell, Doug Daniel, Steven West and Rohan Langford plus sports trainer Judy Mustard.
Neely Returns to Tiger Land!
After seven years away from the Tigers Den, former duel premiership player and 2001 Best and Fairest player Bill Neely is set to rejoin the organisation for Season 2010.
The midfielder has been on a journey that has secured him a further four Best and Fairest awards in three different states / territories including two at Glenelg in the South Australian National Football League – the Club he joined when departing Queanbeyan in 2002.
Following a three year stint at Glenelg he transferred back to AFL Canberra for a stint with arch rival Ainslie during which time he won a further Best and Fairest and two AFL Canberra Player of the Year Awards. Last season he joined Lavington in the strong Oven and Murray League – highly regarded as one of the best country leagues in Australia winning another B & F award. Winning this award is even more creditable as he travelled from Adelaide via Melbourne each week to Albury to play for the Panthers.
Bill was a member of the successful AFL Canberra Representative team that won the Australian Country Championships in Shepparton in 2008 gaining an All Australian Jumper for his efforts.
Business opportunities in Adelaide as a Personal Trainer has now seen those opportunities become available in Canberra. This will enable the dynamic onballer to play in the Tigers colours of which he played 95 1stGrade games during the period 1997 through to 2002 when joining the Tigers as a 17 year from Yarrawonga.
The lieu of being admitted to the Tigers 100 Club has been a major factor in his decision to rejoin the Tigers. This on top of playing alongside brother in-law Neil Irwin and the fact that he regards the Tigers as the “best club” he has been with on his colourful journey.
Wife Debbie was a former masseur of the Club and the granddaughter of Tiger Legend, the late Stan Anderson and niece to Robert and Ian both former players of the Club. Robert played 229 1stGrade games for the Tigers during a long and illustrious career which included a stint with Footscray.
His signature along with that of Toby Conroy (Frankston and Sandringham of the VFL) provides the Tigers with a strong mid field when mixed with 2009 Mulrooney Medallist Mitch Daniher.
“2010 Season Fast Approaching”
Training has stepped up a gear in February as players gradually become that “little bit fitter”.
There are a number of new faces in attendance mixed with a few former players returning. An average of 50 players are in attendance most evenings with Conditioning Coach Paul James putting the guys through a tough session in warm conditions.
The potential for many of the Tigers young players to play 1st Grade football this season has left an air of excitement in the camp particularly so with Coach Mark Armstrong.
He is now in his 18th year with the Tigers, nine as Coach and still warms to the occasion of doing his best at each training session. “The legs (and there’s not much of them) are starting to feel the pain, but the heart is still there to succeed. I love playing and as long as I think I can contribute on the field, the more I want to be involved with our younger playing group – and they are exciting to watch as they progress”
“There are a number of players who should take the next step in 2010 in particular Tigers Under 18 Grade Best and Fairest Sam Daniel along with youngster Sam Jensen who at just 16 could really make an impact this year at senior grade level.
Last seasons Reserve Grade League Best and Fairest Daniel Jabornik fitness levels are way above any previous year he has been with the Club – he should really step up this year. Michael Redmond is another as is Jake Oram. It’s a great time at the Club and I am looking forward to the challenge”
Captain Ryan Quade (white singlet) leads a strong group of last season’s senior grade players in a testing run around Dairy Farmers Park. Also in the photo is new recruit Toby Conroy (red singlet).
If ever a bit of “luck” sprang to assist the Tigers then there is more than a strong probability the Tigers will be contenders in 2010.
“Luck” has not been in favour of the Club for the past few years.
Injury concerns have certainly been to the forefront of each campaign. Without listing them, it would be fair to say “enough is enough” says Coach Mark Armstrong!!
When the 2010 AFL Canberra Competition commences over the weekend 10/11 April the Tigers will hopefully provide supporters with much optimism for the Season ahead.
The Club has lost a number of players including outstanding youngster Kaine Stevens to the Greater Western Sydney team. Player stocks have been bolstered with the signing of former VFL player of the Sandringham and Frankston Football Clubs in Toby Conroy.
The return of Tom Hollis and Brendan Ward – who rejoin the club after two years overseas – plus an enormously talented group of players graduating from its Under 18 Grade ranks should see the Tigers thereabouts come September 2010.
Liam Wilkinson also rejoins the Tigers with promising youngster Michael Moss signing to play after being with the Club on permit from Nowra two seasons ago. He played a number of games with the Sydney Swans Reserves last year.
Armstrong is preparing for a new look Tigers combination to commence the season. “It’s been pretty well documented that we have lost a number of players, but the guys the club has signed are quality players and should be great for us” Armstrong said.
“Our Reserve Grade team won the premiership last year with an average age of 20. They will be given every opportunity to play at senior level given the players that may not be available early in the season and from there who knows! It’s a young group and it’s bloody exciting”
Likely to be unavailable for the commencement of the season will be Roy Jaques and Renee Ioppi who are recovering from off season surgery. The Tigers ruck man Scott Dickinson will miss most of 2010 with shoulder surgery after playing only 7 games last year. Brother Todd could be with SANFL Club Glenelg if he concludes a successful preseason with that club.
Armstrong admitted it had been a tough and somewhat gruelling off season shoring up players for the Tigers list but he was somewhat buoyed with the fact that many youngsters wanted to join the club from the local region and from interstate.
The Tigers may have had a few forced departures for Season 2010 but their player stocks have been strengthened with that of the recruitment of Toby Conroy from VFL Club Frankston.
Conroy was a regular attendee at the Tigers training sessions during the later part of 2009 and he has put pen to paper recently confirming his playing intentions with the Tigers next year.
Toby was a member of the NSW/ACT Rams in 2001, he also played for Ainslie during this period in 2001-2002 playing 15 senior games alongside the likes of Joel Feuerherdt and James Kavanagh before transferring to the VFL.
Three seasons playing in the VFL with Sandringham (2003-2005 with 30 1st Grade Games) and four seasons with Frankston (2006-2009 with 60 1st Grade Games) the former Leeton lad brings a wealth of experience to a young Tigers outfit and with some familiar faces of a few former Ainslie team mates who have joined the Tigers in recent years Toby’s addition to the Tigers will be a massive boost to the club.
A prolific ball winner with excellent skills, he is an important addition to the Tigers line up that will be missing a number of players for the entire 2010 season due to injuries requiring major surgery over the summer of 2009/2010.
Ruckman Scott Dickinson and youngster Paul Franchi will both miss the entire 2010 season with shoulder surgery as will Dane Miller who suffered a knee injury in the Reserve Grade Grand Final. Off season surgery to Captain Renee Ioppi and Roy Jaques will limit their appearance’s early in the year as will the appearance of Jeremy Kirkwood who had ankle surgery during the Tigers finals campaign.
Training for the Tigers 2010 onslaught commences on December 1 from 6.00pm at Dairy Farmers Park.
Swannie Selected to Play for the CATS!

The Tigers Under 18 Grade Coach Paul Campbell is an Assistant Coach of the team.
The ACT/South Coast Cats will play against six other teams from regions throughout NSW, with the initial AFL NSW/ACTAMS squad to be selected from players at the carnival.

The Tigers dynamic on baller Mitch Daniher has been awarded the highest honour in AFL Canberra football by being named the 2009 Mulrooney Medallist.
He along with two other players Chad Gibson of Eastlake and Craig Healey of Tuggeranong shared the top honour which was announced on Monday evening at the Mulrooney Medal Count. He wasn’t the only Tigers player to gain an award with the J McNamara Medal for the Best and Fairest Reserve Grade player being awarded to the Tigers Daniel Jabornik. It was a fantastic occasion for these two players who have both been stand out performers in their respective grades this year.
The Mulrooney Medal presentation was held at the Belconnen Labor Club – Major Sponsors of AFL Canberra. The Tigers Coach mark Armstrong was also acknowledged for his 300th 1st Grade match.
The Tigers Legendary Player / Administrator the late Alan Muir was inducted into the AFL Canberra Hall of Fame along with another magnificent administrator during his time Bill Mahoney who had a long association with the Manuka Football Club and the ACTAFL as its President for 12 years. Two former players were also inducted into the Hall of Fame. Bob Franklin (from the now defunct Manuka Football Club) and Guy Cannon (Manuka and Eastlake Football Clubs).
The Mulrooney Medal last crossed the border in 1997 when Steve Vizy won the award. A two time Best and Fairest winner at the Tigers no one goes harder at the ball than Mitch Daniher. The award is a true indication of this mans ability to gain respect. His tenacious and often relentless attack at the football is unparalleled. Well done to one of the most respected young men in the Tigers Club. Daniel Jabornik is another who has outstanding abilities. As one of the bigger guys at the Club he has a strong future with the organisation as he gains experience and fitness at senior grade level of competition. “Jibba” joined the Tigers Club from Pambula Football Club some years ago through the SERAS program and now enjoys a strong association with the Tigers. Well done to another very welled liked youngster of the Club.
The Tigers were runner up in the Club Championship Award all three goal kicking awards being 1st, Reserve and Under18 Grades with Jake Orams being 4th in the Under 18 grade voting.
