While the scoreboard showed a ‘no-contest’ the newest team in ACTWAFL ranks continue to show a great deal of effort and some encouraging signs of improvement against a Magpies team that is arguably the best running team in the competition and close to the highest skilled.

In a match played in great spirit the Tigers tried hard to compete and turn the game into a series of one-on-one contests as the Magpies showed how dangerous they can be once they get their running game going. The Tigers showed in the first quarter that they are at their best fresh with Kristen Turner, Jane Vucago and Fran Langi applying great defensive pressure and leading a backline that made the Magpies work hard for every goal.

The second term started brightly as Rach Short put on a great shepherd to give Davina Harris time to run the ball out of the backline but some harsh and completely unnecessary over-officiating of the ‘exclusion zone’ and resultant 50 metre penalties gifted Belconnen half of their goals for the term and appeared to sap some of the Tigers pressure.

The Tigers applied more pressure in the second half, skipper Jacinta Froud and vice Dani Lewis leading the way. Hannah Dunn continued her stellar start to the year continuing to throw herself into marking contests with little regard for her own safety, tackling herself to a stand still. Katie Newton, Sarah Van Meurs and Liz Langi all had their best games for the season but in the end the Tigers were beaten to the footy too often and ultimately outclassed by a Magpies team far more experienced and skilled on the day.

The Tigers will enjoy the long weekend off before returning to their home ground to take on ANU at 11am on Saturday 19 June.

The Tigers ladies team were desperately unlucky not to post their first win of the season in wet conditions at Town Park against ADFA on Saturday.

In the first half the Tigers were slow to get into the game and allowed ADFA first use of the ball. The back-line, led again by determined efforts from Kristen Turner, Dani Louis and Rach Short, worked together to try and restrict the ADFA team, however it was ADFA who were able to post the first goal of the game. That seemed to kick start the Tigers as they worked a little harder and Davina Harris, on her way to a best on ground display playing in the midfield, pushed forward and made the most of an opportunity to give the Tigers a one point lead at quarter time. The second quarter started much like the first as again ADFA were first to the ball and built an 8 point lead at half time.

The Tigers made a brighter start to the second half with Hannah Dunn again playing well in the ruck and captain Jacinta Froud trying her best to lift the team. Davina kicked an almost action replay of her first goal to close the gap before a incorrect decision by the umpire, mistakenly awarding a 50m penalty against the Tigers after receiving abuse from the ADFA coaching staff, gifted the ADFA team their only goal for the term. The Tigers to their credit responded well and vice captain Fran Langi booted the teams third major (and the first of her career) to reduce the deficit to just two points at the final term.

The Tigers hit the lead in the final term when a great handball from Siau Goh gave Katie Newton an opportunity to goal, which she duly did. The Tigers then had opportunities to increase their margin but were unable to do so. Half way through the final term both Hannah and Davina were forced from the field with injury which made the job that much tougher. A correct free kick gave the ADFA team the chance to take back the lead which they were able to do, the Tigers defence’s inexperience showing a little as the ball probably should have been able to have been touched on the line. With seven minutes to go their was still time for the Tigers but to be fair it was the ADFA team that had all of the run in their legs in the last five minutes and kicked away to the final margin of 14 points.

While the result was disappointing the effort of the ladies on the day could not be questioned and the improvement they continue to display in their first season is a credit to their efforts on the training track. Another highlight were the debuts of Te Ani Lusk Waititi and Jacqui Williams who both showed a lot of promise in their first games. The Tigers team next face the Belconnen Magpies at 12 noon next Sunday at Jamo oval.

The Tigers discovered how tough the ACTWAFL competition is as they took on Ainslie, the beaten favourites in the previous two grand finals, in their first ever home game at the picturesque Town Park on Saturday.

The undermanned and inexperienced Tigers were well beaten on the scoreboard but can take a lot of positives from there second game. In particular the Tigers demonstrated in the second quarter an ability to compete fiercely against more talented and experienced opponents restricting a frustrated Ainslie to just one goal in that term.

Kristen Turner led the way of half back flank highlighted by an excellent smother and second effort tackle rewarded accordingly. Davina Harris was excellent as the loose player in Defence role and the full back line of Rach Short, Katie Newton and Jane Vucago battled bravely against a constant weight of possession. In the midfield Tegan Tisma and Jacinta Froud was doing a good job trying to restrict the output of Ainslie’s talented midfield and Hannah Dunn stood up in the ruck all day.

The second half began disappointingly as the Tigers seemed to leave their game in the sheds as Ainslie piled on a couple of quick goals almost untouched. The Tigers tried hard to compete again towards the end of the quarter before running out of legs in the final term to see the scoreboard blow out.

The Tigers return to Town Park next week when they take on ADFA (Saturday 29 May at 11am) and will be hoping to get some players back (they were only able to field the bare 18 against Ainslie due to injuries and unavailability) and put in a more competitive performance.

Our first ever Women's Team!

The Queanbeyan Tigers have made an encouraging start to their inaugural ACTWAFL season pushing the Gungahlin Jets all the way in a 12 point defeat in their round one clash on Sunday.

The Tigers fielded just three players to have played in an official ACTWAFL game (former Tuggeranong players Jacinta Froud, Davina Harris and Rach Short) leaving 19 players ‘on debut’.

Kicking with the aid of a slight breeze the Jets dominated field position in the first term but were not able to score a goal thanks to the outstanding Tigers defence led by Rach Short, Bobbie Minnecon and Dani Louis.

The second term saw a more even contest as the game became a bit of an arm wrestle. The Tigers midfield led by Hannah Dunn playing in the ruck for the first time and with the experienced Jacinta Froud guiding young guns Tegan Tisma and Chrissie Bourbous started to get the ball going forward, helped by some excellent rebound from Kristen Turner and Sophie Read on the half back flank.

Late in the quarter Michelle Hansen, almost straight from the bench laid an excellent tackle and was rewarded with a shot on goal that unfortunately slewed of the side of the boot for a behind.

The Jets won the game in the third quarter using the wind to their advantage and kicking the first two goals of the game, despite the best efforts of the Tigers defence. The third quarter also saw the low light of the day when Bobbie, who had stared in Defence to that point, dislocating her shoulder and having to leave the ground.

The final quarter saw the Tigers play the best footy of their short existence with Hannah and Tegan again prominent and wingers Davina Harris and Gen Fleeton starting to link the hard work of the back line to some forward opportunities. At the seven minute mark of the final term a Tigers forward thrust fell in to the lap of Katie Newton who had been moved to full forward at the three quarter time break.

Katie banged it straight through the middle, much to the delight of the vocal and enthusiastic Tigers fans who had made the long trip out to Amaroo. Although their was still time and the Tigers tried hard to run the game out they were held out for the rest of the final term by a determined Jets outfit.

The Women's first Banner!

Overall it was a very promising display from the newest additions to the Tigers club and one that shows a lot of promise for the season ahead. The Tigers will now have plenty of time on the training paddock as they have the bye in Round 2, followed by the league general bye the week after.

They then play their first ever home game at Queanbeyan Town Park at 11am on Saturday 22 May, taking on last years Grand Finalists Ainslie in what will be a great challenge for our team.
