ACT Captain joins Tigerettes for the 2012.

October 9, 2011 by

THE Queanbeyan Tigerettes have pulled off a stunning signing coup after attracting the services of current ACT captain Melissa Hurley for the 2012 season.

Hurley will join Queanbeyan from Canberra powerhouse Ainslie with whom the 28-year-old has played in three ACT Women’s Premiership grand finals.

Hurley’s signature is a major boost for the Tigerettes who will enter just their third year of competition next year and boast a largely inexperienced roster.
The midfielder is a previous Ainslie best and fairest winner but said she was now looking for a new challenge.

“The time was right for a change,” she said. “I wanted to be able to give something back to the game and feel like the best way to do that is with a club like Queanbeyan where you’ve got a lot of new players coming through.

“When you play them you get such a good impression, I’ve played at a lot of clubs in different sports and through that you develop a sense of when a club has it right.

“The way they approach their footy is very impressive and I like the way [Tigerettes coach] Dave [Matthews] does things as well, he’s got an absolute belief women can play good football.”

Hurley only took up Aussie Rules five years ago with ANU after playing rugby league at school and representing the ACT in netball.

And after kicking 15 goals last season, the newly minted Tigerette said she’d be joining Queanbeyan while at the top of her game.

“It’s a hard sport to pick up and I feel like I’ve only just got the hang of the game, I’m only just at the phase where my footy brain is actually starting to click,” she said.

Hurley will join a Tigerettes line up next year that will also include fellow ACT representative Hannah Dunn and AFL Canberra under-19s player of the year Tegan Tisma.

Queanbeyan will also welcome back 2005 league best and fairest Jacinta Froud and premiership winning player Rachel Short after both missed the entire 2011 season.

Matthews said he was hopeful Hurley’s signature could prove the catalyst for another one or two high profile off season signings.
