Robert Anderson – our newest AFL Canberra Hall of Fame Member

August 8, 2018 by

Robert Anderson Admitted to the AFL Canberra Hall of Fame.

There were six former players inducted into the AFL Canberra Hall of Fame last Friday night including the Tigers very own Robert Anderson.

Also – For the first-time there was acknowledgment of the Ladies Competition in Canberra with the 3 females being inducted after twenty years of the Ladies AFL Canberra Women’s competition.

It was a tremendous occasion for the 6 inductees, with respective family members of the new inductees in attendance along with many members of the Hall of Fame.

The name Anderson has been familiar to the Tigers Club since the late fifties when the late Stan Anderson joined the Club from Box Hill in Melbourne.  He quickly became a house hold name in Queanbeyan with his strong aggressive play after which he retired as a player to become a twenty-year volunteer veteran of the Club as a “strapper” for the teams.

Son Robert joined the Tigers after a junior career with Manuka Football Club and established himself as an outstanding player with a prolific left foot kick that didn’t go unseen by VFL scouts. After a short senior career with the Tigers (which included being a member of the 1985 1st Grade Premiership team), he was recruited by Footscray (now Western Bulldogs) in the AFL.    He later returned to his home club playing 229 1st Grade games.   A full resume of “Ando’s” career follows.

Other AFL Canberra Hall of Fame Inductees were Ken Griggs (Manuka Football Club), Andrew Bishop (Ainslie Football Club), Melissa Backhouse (Eastlake Football Club), Melissa Naughton (Tuggeranong Hawks) and Emily Diprose (Ainslie / Eastlake).

The AFL Canberra Hall of Fame Committee comprises Former League General Managers Ron Fowlie and Steve Dobbie, former Mulrooney Medalist Keith Miller and former Belconnen Magpies Champion Dave Bennett.
