Jill and Nicole Bright sponsored U16’s – Div 1
Round 2 – 12/05/2012
Footy is a funny game sometimes. Last year, Tuggeranong, our opponents on Sunday, were on the bottom of the ladder while we won the premiership. This year, they gave us a lesson in hard, fast football.
A cold but sunny day at Dairy Farmers Park was the scene of the crime straight after the seniors toweled up Sydney Hills Eagles. The boys started well in a tough scrap and by half way through the first quarter, we were only a couple of points down. Unfortunately, that’s where we would stay as Tuggeranong piled on goal after goal after goal. We couldn’t match it with them in terms of leg pace and run and carry of the footy.
Our confidence dropped as did our skill level and work rate. We were amazingly still in it with a sniff at half time, only being down by 5 ½ goals. Our legs tired, as did our mental capacity to work and the Hawks put on 10 goals to 1 after half time, eventually running out winners by 95 points.
Not all is doom and gloom though, as it is only round 2 and we have some work to do. Dan Osarek, Gavin Ross and Alex Page tried their hardest all day and we lost some players early with injury. Not only these injuries, but Brad Murphy, Jeramey Edwards, Shaun Franks, Zach Douch and Andrew Howship had already played a full game hours earlier in the Division 2 game. Thanks to Mitch O’Toole who came up from Div 2 to help us out for the day.
Final scores – Tigers 4.1.25 – Ainslie 18.12.120
Goal Kickers – S.Walpole 2, J.Callanan, D.Osarek
Best Players – A.Page, D.Osarek, S.Walpole, G.Ross, M.Solway

Round 2 – 12/05/2012
Officeworks Fyshwick sponsored Queanbeyan/Goulburn Tigers Under 16s Div 2 took on the Tuggeranong Hawks at Dairy Farmers on Sunday morning.
The Tigers boys were coming off a big loss and keen to play a better game and put points on the board.
The Tigers looked much better with Tigers winning 14 19 103 to Hawks 8 3 51
This week seen a mix of boys from the 16’s squad with a few boys to back up in Div 1 later in the day.
The boys started off slowly in the first quarter but built on the scoreboard with some good team work from all the boys lifting in the second and third quarters. The boys came into the final quarter filled with confidence in themselves and each other and kept Tuggeranong scoreless for this final quarter.
Goal kickers for the day were: James Kent 4, Shaun Franks 3, Mitch O’Toole 3, Nathan Bull 2, Brad Murphy 1 and Brandon Williams 1
Congratulations to our Award winners this week James Kent – Tigers Canteen and Mitch O’Toole – Network Video
A big thank you goes to those parents who worked in the canteen or on the bbq during the day.

Round 1 – 5/05/2012
Well footy was finally back for the year when the Officeworks Fyshwick sponsored Queanbeyan/Goulburn Tigers Under 16s Div 1 took on Marist under lights on Friday night at Dairy Farmers Park. The first game of the season is always a difficult one for players and coaches, as you are never sure what to expect from your opposition or your own team for that matter.
The first quarter started well for the Tigers, as we were winning the clearances out of the middle with Brad Stein and Dan Osarek getting in and under and winning some good contested ball. Matt Rath started the game well at centre half forward and provided some good quick ball into our forward 50. Good kicking skills saw Sam Walpole place 3 over in this quarter with a total of 6 for the game. As the quarter wore on though, Marist started to get first hands on the footy, but our centre half back line of Swan, Burns and McKenzie ensured that Marist rarely got the ball into our defensive 50, with their only goal for the quarter coming right on quarter time. Qtr time scores Tigers 5.2.32 to Marist 1.2.8
The 2nd quarter for the Tigers was a disappointing one. With Marist increasing their pressure we started to lose the thirst for the contested ball, and Marist started to get on top. Our talk was non existent in the 2nd quarter, but our back line lead by Gavin Ross and Maurice ‘Motown’ Crehan stood firm and were working well under some pressure. Despite the Tigers only being outscored by only a point in the quarter, if our opponents had been a bit more polished with their disposal the half time margin could have been less. Half time scores Tigers 7.4.46 to Marist 3.5.23
At half time the coaches spoke to the players about the lack of manning up, the intensity and talk as those facets of the game disappeared in the 2nd quarter. We also spoke about players finding space and spreading when we had the footy to create some run. Shaun Franks, Zach Douch, Alex Page all had fantastic quarters as they started to lift their work rate across wing and half forward. Our defence again was fantastic when challenged by providing good rebound and run off half back only allowing 3 behinds for the quarter. Three highlights for the quarter were provided by Daniel Edwards. The first being a second effort after a contest where Daniel picked himself up off the ground to get the footy, then brush an attempted tackle then bang it through from 30, and the second being a shepard that he provided for Matt Rath that allowed him to get the ball to the top of the square which led to a goal for TJ. The other highlight was provided by Andrew Howship in the back pocket. He laid a tackle after chasing down a Marist player which affected the kick and it was turned over into Tigers hands. It is those sort of ‘one percenters’ that can win games. After a much improved effort in the 3rd quarter the Tigers had kicked clear of Marist.
3 quarter time scores Tigers 11.5.71 to Marist 3.8.26
The last quarter was a fairly scrappy affair with a lot of tired boys out there from both sides. We asked the boys at 3 qtr time to run out the game well, and keep up the intensity around the contested ball. A few of the boy started to feel the pinch with players going down with cramp. Dan Peryman battled away well in the ruck and played there for most of the game with only a couple of rests down in the forward line. After a quiet night in the first 3 qtrs Brad Murphy started to get his hands on the footy, and had a couple of telling touches in the last.
Full time scores Tigers 12.9.81 to Marist 3.8.26
Goalkickers; S. Walpole 6, TJ Neal 2, A. Page, D. Edwards, M. Rath, B. Murphy all kicked singles.
Overall a pretty pleasing first up win for the boys. The coaches were both happy that the boys believe and trust the game plan that we are trying to implement this season, and tried to use it at every opportunity. Despite the lapse in the 2nd quarter, based on what the boys showed we should be in for a good year. There is some work to do on delivery into the forward 50 and some skills work although this should come along as we play more games.
Awards went to the following players
Queanbeyan Tigers Canteen Award – Francis Burns – Outstanding on a half back flank providing rebound, run and most of all his willingness to hit the contest. Probably the best game I have seen him play at the club.
Network Video Karabar Award – Steve McKenzie – Provided great run and dash off the half back flank, and was the set up for a lot of our forward thrusts from half back.

Round 1 – 5/05/2012
The Jill and Nicole Bright sponsored QBN Tigers Under 16’s Div 2 season opener was played last weekend and saw Queanbeyan Tigers take on Marist at Town Park.
The boy’s began the first quarter with plenty of enthusiasm and commitment to commence the season but trailed 3-4 22 to Marist 1-0 6. A good snap shot from Dylan McKenna the lone scoring shot for the quarter. Brandon Williams and Mitch Wallis were strong in defence.
The second quarter saw the score line move to Marist 6-7 47 to Queanbeyan Tigers 0.1 7. Marist dominated the quarter despite some very willing tackling and contesting for the ball. At 3/4 time the score had moved to Marist 13-14 92 to Tigers 1.2 8 with Marist again dominating the quarter and placing Queanbeyan under constant pressure.
The last quarter the Tigers were again under pressure despite good efforts from everybody with Jordan Miller the pick of the players. Marist ran out eventual winners 19-14 128 to Tigers 2-4 16. Goal scorer in the last quarter was Brandon Williams who unfortunately was carried from the field on a stretcher and ambulanced to hospital with a suspected neck injury. It was good to hear he is ok.
A committed effort from the boys in the first game for the season although outclassed on the day by a very good opposition. Keep up the hard work at training and look forward to an improved performance against Tuggeranong next week.
