Queanbeyan/Goulburn Tigers U12s win premiership!

Last Saturday the Junior Tigers had three teams compete in the 2010 AFL Canberra Junior Grand Finals.

In the first game the Queanbeyan/Goulburn Tigers took on Calwell Swans. After Calwell defeated the Tigers in the 2nd Semi the tigers had to fight back to make the Grand Final to have a chance at redemption.

And that they did, after a tight first half the boys played some outstanding football to eventually take out the Premiership 7-6-(48) to 1-1-(7). It was a terrific effort by the combined team and a big thank you to the Goulburn boys and parents for making such a great commitment to the team.

George Cross was Best on Ground and other players to play well were Wilson Morshead, Zac Virgo, Tyler Van Luin and Rylie Young.

The one that got away! After going straight into the Grand Final the team looked poised for a great win being 28 points up early in the last term. The young tigers had played good footy and set up the match winning lead by working hard both ways and the attack on the footy was second to none.

However with such a high work rate comes fatigue and the boys really started to run out of legs and Eastlake started to capitalise. They kicked three goals in 3 minutes to put the tigers under enormous pressure and when the team had steadied and looked to have won the game a free kick and then a 50 metre penalty (tough call!!) put the Eastlake team deep into their forward line.

The rest is now history as they were able to score and hung on in the dying seconds to snatch a 1 point win 7-13-(55) to EFC 9-2-(56). The tigers were devastated however what a great effort by all concerned. They can all hold their heads up high as there is no disgrace going down in a Grand Final by the barest of margins.

Ethan Callender was judged Best on Ground and other players to have an impact on the day was Jason Taylor, Marcus Lawrence and Jeremy MacDonald.

No matter the result in the main game the St Edmunds Tigers had created a piece of history as being the first team under the new amalgamation to play off in the Grand Final.

It has only been two years since the two clubs joined together and whilst there have been many teething problems the resolve of the teams has never wavered. This season by far has been the best and making the Grand Final is a true testament to the players from 3 clubs, coach’s, parents and supporters.

The boys fought hard against EFC/WC but fell short 6-6-(42) to 11-8-(74). A big thank you to the 4 Goulburn Boys and parents for being apart of this group and to the Queanbeyan and St Edmunds boys well done on a break through year.
