Tigers Reserves 2009 Premiers

The Tigers Reserve Grade capped of a stellar season winning the 2009 Premiership on Saturday at Manuka Oval against Eastlake.

The Demons were worthy opponents coming from last position mid season to play off in the Grand Final but they were not able to contain a strong Tigers combination in the Grand Final. It was a close fought match in the first half but after the long break the youthful Tigers combination finally started to convert the many missed opportunities in the first half to win comfortably – the final score being: 11.17 (83) to 8.8 (56)

It wasn’t without drama with season campaigner and team leader Dane Miller rupturing knee ligaments in the first quarter to leave the young team without that added experience. But it was some of the other quality senior grade players who stepped up like 200 1st Grade game Chris Davis who led the way. He along with fellow backline player Paul Briedis provided strong rebounding attack from defence. After the long break, the quality of Paul Franchi was on show. If his dazzling left foot shots at goal had gone through the strong Queanbeyan contingent of supporters would have had something else to cheer about other than the good play afforded by all players. Franchis’ consistency during the day – particular later in the game – earned him the best on ground medal, an item firmly embedded on his chest throughout post match celebrations.

There were many fine players on the day including another youngster in James Manie (three goals) and his forward partner in crime Brett Fruend who posted 4 timely goals. And what of the old bloke DQ !! He keeps getting better with age and with another Premiership medallion around his neck it seems sure that he will go around for yet another season with his beloved Tigers.

There were fantastic scenes in the change rooms after the match with Coach Adrian Pavese overjoyed to win a premiership for the Tigers and this quality group of young men. And young they were. Average age is 20. With a squad of 30 to select from there were some disappointed guys at the final training session. But there was no disappointment on the day as each and every player in the squad became part and parcel of the on field battle.

The Premiership is certainly a credit to the entire coaching staff of the Tigers Club, the players and all our great support staff who give so much of their time each and every week over a ten month period.

The Squad of Premiership Players included:

Dennis Quade*, Paul Briedis*, Chris Davis*, Paul Franchi*, Dane Miller*, Tim Cook*, Alex Cuttiford, Daniel Jabornik*, Jared Daniel*, Luke Cheetham, Keaden Watts*, Beau Watts*, Sean Kelly*, Jared Priestley, David Corcoran*, Simon Kelland, Chris Haddock*, Daniel Cuttiford, Daniel McGavin*, Sam Burns*, Mitch McKenzie*, Ben Jabornik, Greg Hair*, Jackson Brooker*, Luke Thompson*, Bill May*, James Manie*, Sam Burley, Hayden Kelly, Brett Fruend*.

In other Grand Finals, Marist College won their second consecutive premiership defeating Belconnen with the Magpies winning a close encounter over Ainslie in the main match. The 1st Grade encounter was decided in the final minutes in another classic Grand Final for AFL Canberra.
