The Jill & Nicole Bright U16’s – Div 2
Round 10 – 24/07/2010

Town Park was in great condition for Saturdays match against the 3rd placed Eastlake/Weston Creek team. We knew we were in for a game as the opposition was there in numbers early and getting a feel for the ground. Jason Wilcock took the boys for an early warm up and hammered home that we needed to get the jump on Eastlake early.

The first quarter was tight and we were getting a lot of the ball but Eastlake continually had numbers around the packs and we were over committing the contests. Our star engine room was firing and new comer James McKenna was relentless all day, but our disposal in close was letting us down. The second and third quarters were in similar fashion as the first as the scores see-sawed and we just didn’t seem to click. Scratcher and I were giving the boys the instruction to talk more and run harder but it just didn’t seem to work. With 10 minutes left in the final quarter, with a mix up with a rotation (Marcus’s boot had blow out problem), the center bounce happened and left us one short in the backline where the ball went into and they narrowly missed a goal. This was the end of Eastlake going into their forward 50 for the match as we piled on 6 goals straight in 10 minutes to win by 33 points.

This was a good win in the end after a tight struggle in the first 3 and ½ quarters. Fitness is going to be the key leading into the finals as we seemed to fade out against Belconnen a few weeks ago. We need to be able to run hard all game forward and back.

Final scores – Tigers 12.3.75, Eastlake/Weston Creek 6.6.42
Goals – M.Lawrence 3, J.Taylor 3, J. MacDonald 2, TJ Neal 2, D. Perryman, S.Walpole.

Round 9 – 3/07/2010

It was the top of the table clash this week, Tigers V Belconnen Black. Callum McLennan and James McKenna were to play their first games for the Tigers but it seemed we were doomed from the start. Lack of spare Guernsey’s was our first hurdle and then, the Belconnen team manager came over to us to inform us that they only had 16 players so we only played 16 players. We already had 7 on the bench which quickly grew to 9. Belconnen number in the second quarter dropped to 15, so another came to the bench. This was unfortunate, as every time we made changes throughout the quarter, we basically recycled the entire on-field side so we had no continuity for the entire day.

My message to the players before the game was to run hard as they seemed to be a bigger and bulkier side than us and I felt our leg speed would give us an advantage. We started off really well, as we have all year, and kicked out to a lead of a couple of goals early. Our tackling was fierce, we used the corridor and shepherded consistently throughout the quarter. This was not the case in the second quarter. All the good things we had done in the first let us down in the second as Belconnen came back at us hard. We looked tired and slow as Belconnen hunted in packs and got numbers to the ball. The third quarter was a see-sawing affair and we kept ourselves in it but only just. We started well in the last quarter but some costly mistakes and wide shots on goal let us down and we fell short by 13 points.
This was a better result (If you can say that!) than last time we played them but it looks like we still have some work to do – like goal kicking practice!

Final scores – Belconnen Black 12.3.75, Tigers 9.8.62
Goal Kickers – TJ Neal 2, A. Walker 2, M.Solway, J.Taylor, A. Palazzo, C.McLennan, J.McDonald

Round 8 – 26/06/2010

All week I was reenacting the robot from lost in space (“Danger, Danger”) with my arms flailing about, trying to get the point across to the players that this was a danger game for us.

After coming off two weeks against lowly-ranked opposition of Ainslie and Tuggeranong, with massive wins, I was hoping the players wouldn’t take this game easily. Marist sat equal third on the ladder with two other teams and only two games below us. With team Scratcher out for the weekend, we had to sub in Kelly Callender, Tony Edwards and Murray Lembit to help out for the day. Also missing from the line up was Jack Jacobs (broken nose), Kieran Schmidt (wisdom teeth) and Sam Walpole and James McKenna (both unavailable). Jason Wilcock was there only in body, due to an unforeseen illness he may have picked up.

There was a strong breeze to the Woden end and were kicking that way in the first quarter. Start off strong? – We sure did. For 90% of the quarter, the ball didn’t leave our forward 50. While this was good, as our forward pressure was enormous, Marist flooded back and we had the majority of players in the 50. This showed on the scoreboard as we kicked 5 goals 9 behinds.

The wind was playing havoc as we started the second quarter and we let Marist back in with a couple of early goals. We then kicked into gear, left the forward line open and kicked away. Steve McKenzie (after an initial mix up in the 1st quarter getting his hand strapped), came onto the wing and dominated for the entire game. He was in everything and attacked the ball hard which set up multiple goals for us. Caleb Hardy on the other wing had leather poisoning and carved the opposition up. Matt Marinelli pushed forward as a strong marking option and Cheyenne Bowers came on in the second to the half back flank and patrolled the back line like a gorilla in the jungle protecting his patch. Aaron Palazzo and Lachlan Tzovaras continue to get better and better every week and Dylan Goodlet played his best game to date, even if he did kick 3 behinds but his contested marking was really impressive.

The second half continued in the same vein as the first but we kept Marist scoreless for the entire half. The only downer for the day was kicking 31 behinds. This happened because of the wind and also players bombing away into the forward line. This is something we will be working on this week at training before the top of the table clash with Belconnen.

Final scores – Marist 2.2.14, Tigers 20.31.151
Goal Kickers – M.Lawrence 7, TJ Neal 5, J.McDonald 3, E.Callender, D.Osarek, M.Marinelli, J.Taylor, N.Lembit

Round 7 – 19/06/2010

Bring out your snow jackets and beanies; we’re going to Condor to take on Tuggeranong! As the boys arrived at the ground, we were met with sub-zero temperatures but luckily for the coaches, peculated coffee was on sale at the canteen. This may have looked like a Mark Thompson “eating a sandwich in the coach’s box” type of arrogance, but instead, it was a cunning tactic to unfreeze our brains for the challenge ahead. Even though the Hawks were on the bottom of the ladder, their side was tall and determined, as they knew our Tigers are a class side and would hit them early; and that, we did. The Tigers came out hard and fast, like we always do, and banged through goal after goal in a clinical display of footy that would have some of Pav’s reserve side players looking shaky at their spots on the senior list. Our new look forward line of Steve McKenzie, Norm Lembit and “Milney” a.k.a T.J were snapping them from everywhere, even over their heads! The usual suspects in Jason Taylor, Ethan Callender, Jeremy MacDonald and Mark Solway showed their class through the middle. Gavin Ross, Kieran Schmidt and Caleb Hardy were solid in defense in which Tuggeranong didn’t even muster a single point for the first half of football. Scratcher “Rene Kink” Neal spent most of the first half on the wing and behind the goals in a new coaching technique or was he trying to get a kick?
The second half started slowly as there were many numbers around the ball and it was hard to get some consistent forward ball movement. Thanks to the in-and-under plays of Francis and Miles Burns and the instructions from our gazelle-like runner, Jason Wilcock, we started to get on top again. Daniel Edwards must have had a skunk under his guernsey, as he was in miles of space by himself and got us rolling into the forward line again with a magnificent run and bounce down the half forward flank. This play opened the flood gates and we were off again with “Riewoldt” Palazzo marking strongly and converting from 20 meters out. In the end, we ran away with a 100-point win which was extremely pleasing to all who were in attendance. This gives us an extremely important shot at Marist this week and then the top of the table clash with Belconnen Black in round 9. Two really important weeks are in front of us and while it has been pleasing to see some of our training drills working into game day, we must not take the coming weeks lightly and need to hit the training track hard.
A great win and well done boys.

Final scores – Tuggeranong 2.2.14, Tigers 17.12.114

Round 6 – 5/06/2010

A beautiful sunny day for football greeted us at Town Park to take on Ainslie. There were going to be a lot of changes through the bench throughout the day, as we had a side of 25 boys raring to go.
The Tigers started off really well kicking the first 5 goals before Ainslie could even muster a point. This was made possible from the guys in the middle; Captain Jason Taylor, Ethan Callender, Jeremy Macdonald and Caleb Hardy, who were clean with their hands, hard at the footy and led from the front.
This was the message I gave to them before hand, as we knew Ainslie would come out hard and fast. The second quarter was more of the same from the determined Tiger outfit as they kept their opponents scoreless for the term.
The boys were still lively at half-time, even though we were up by 11 goals and hadn’t really been challenged all day. A very slow start to the third term let Ainslie kick a goal and put some pressure on us that we hadn’t felt all day but to the boy’s credit, they absorbed that pressure and kicked away at the end of the quarter. The back line really hadn’t had seen much action all day and due to the scores, I gave some players time in some positions that they would not normally see.
Our midfield had a well deserved rest in the back line and Alan Walker, Francis and Miles Burns and Daniel Perryman found themselves in the Tigers engine room for the final quarter. Not only were they up to the task but so was our new look forward line with Sam Walpole bagging 2 and Gavin Ross and Norman Lembit bagging 1 each. Daniel Edwards even chimed in with a beauty and the ever unpredictable TJ Coughtrie a.k.a Milney, snapped one in mid air which pleased our team manager Shellie on the side lines.
Twinkle-Toes Matt Marinelli had learnt some duck and weave dance moves from Mark Solway, in which he dodged numerous defenders to get us a scoring shot in the forward 50. A special mention goes to Marcus Lawrence who kicked a lazy 5 for the day, playing off the wing. He could have bagged a couple more if he had not come off in the last with a knee injury.
The most pleasing thing for the day was the way that all the boys stood up and looked after their team mates all day with shepherds and great talk. They are really becoming a team to be reckoned with and I would believe, have the rest of the competition looking over their shoulders. Well done boys.

Final scores – Tigers 19.8.122, Ainslie 3.5.23
Goal Kickers – M. Lawrence 5, J. Jacobs 2, J. Macdonald 2, S. Walpole 2, G. Ross, T. Coughtrie, E. Callender, N. Lembit, D. Peryman , M. Solway, J. Taylor, D. Edwards.

Round 5 – 29/05/2010

Wet weather welcomed the boys for our Round 5 clash against Belconnen Teal. Surprisingly, even after hours of steady rain, the oval at Aranda was in very good condition. However, with the amount of surface water on the ground, it was important that the boys played the percentages by using the conditions to their advantage, either by kicking the ball off the ground or by making sure they were playing in front of their opponent anticipating that the heavy ball will not travel as far through the air.
From the outset, it was clear that our boys wanted the ball more than our opponents. Every Tiger player went in hard to get the contested ball and worked well together by not over committing to the contest. By doing this, we were able to pounce on the loose ball and clear the defensive area or deliver it to a presenting forward.
Jason Taylor was again dominant through the midfield while Ethan Callender was dictating the terms in the ruck. While the conditions were testing the skills of all players, our percentage of hitting targets was very high. I contribute this to the hard work the boys have been putting in on the training track. Unfortunately, we took the foot of the pedal a little in the second. Of particular note was the lack of talking to our ball carriers and the ‘want” for the hard ball when in dispute. Thankfully, the damage on the scoreboard was minimal due to the defensive efforts of our back six. Matt Marinelli, Gavin Ross and Miles Burns were relentless with their tackling while Steve McKenzie was having a huge influence across half back.
The message at the long break was to focus on the things we did well in the first quarter that allowed us the freedom to run the ball and dictate the speed of the game. To the boy’s credit, they rallied together and worked hard and put their stamp on the game. T.J was again finding the leather in front of goal and helped himself to 3 majors while Aaron Palazzo was getting clear of his opponent and becoming a go to man in the forward 50.
Our commitment to run and work hard continued in the last quarter and we were rewarded with kicking 5 goals to our opponents nil. We took the opportunity to move players into different positions while our midfield (Ethan, Jeremy, Francis, Jason) took to the bench for a well earned rest.
Nathan and I were pleased with the efforts of all players in the trying conditions and to see the boys bounce back after being challenged in the second quarter was a key point to take from the match.

Final scores – Belconnen Teal 3.5.23, Tigers 11.9.75

Round 4 – 22/05/2010

After our decisive win against Eastlake / Weston Creek the previous week, it was crucial that the boys remained focused going into our Round 4 game against an unbeaten St Edmunds. Playing on arguably the biggest field in our competition (Hughes oval), our boys fitness levels were about to be fully tested.

The first quarter was played at a fast pace with both teams providing the crowd with some quality footy. The second quarter mirrored the first with more good footy being played. Francis Burns, Marcus Lawrence and Jason Taylor were being ball magnets all around the ground while Norm Lembit continued his good form across half back.

In view of the ground size, the work rate of our ruckman (Jack Jacobs, Ethan Callender) was fantastic and they were well supported in and around the contests by Jeremy MacDonald, Caleb Hardy and Dan Oserak. Our efforts were rewarded as we headed to the sheds with a two goal lead.

After a well earned breather, our efforts continued in the third quarter. After spending the first half in the forward line, Matt Marinelli was moved to centre half back and was rock solid in many overhead marking contests. Kieran Schmidt worked tirelessly on the wing while Jason and Marcus continued their dominance through the midfield playing the role as a small forward; Taylor Coughtrie (Go Milney) was having a big influence in front of goal picking up 4 goals for the day.

Whilst not getting a major themselves, Aaron Palazzo, Dylan Goodlet and Daniel Edwards (who was playing his best game to date) were always thereabouts.

Our fitness (or our opponent’s lack of) was showing as we continued to run hard and in numbers. Our tackling was fierce and our second efforts relentless. Our inaccurate kicking kept the opposition in touch for most of the game however two Tiger goals early in the final term put the result well in our grasp.

Final scores – St Edmunds 7.5.47, Tigers 13.16.94
Goal Kickers – Taylor Coughtrie 4, Jeremy MacDonald 3, Marcus Lawrence 2, Alan Walker 2, Daniel Perryman and Ethan Callender one each

Round 3 – 16/05/2010

We traveled to Kingston oval to face an undefeated Eastlake/Weston Creek side in Round 3.

As in any game, it is vital that we get off to a solid start and that’s exactly what we did. Our midfield (Ethan Callender, Jason Taylor, Jeremy MacDonald and Caleb Hardy) consistently won the ball from the middle and delivered it to our leading forwards. Our pressure to win the hard ball throughout the first half was excellent and our marking overhead could not be faulted.

Again, our back six (Norm Lembit, Francis and Miles Burns, Steve McKenzie, Dan Osarek and Matt Marinelli) worked well together and repelled nearly all opposition entries into their forward 50. Our wingers, Marcus Lawrence and Alan Walker were racking up possessions. Their use of the ball by hand or foot was of a high quality. Marcus was to finish the game with an impressive 5 goals to his name.

As half time approached with our boys having a strong hold on the game, confusion reigned when two players were sent off for a minor indiscretion. In the confusion and lack of communication from the officials we sent another player on the field as a replacement however a few minutes later, the opposing team asked for a head count so the umpire stopped the game to do a head count and it was clear that we had an extra player on the field (18 vs. 17). For this error, we were advised by the umpire that our score had to be reverted back to zero. This was a huge shock for all involved.

In the sheds at half time, the boys showed a lot of maturity by putting the issue aside and focused on the task ahead of them and if I thought the boys played good footy in the first half, I was about to watch them play even a better brand of footy in the second half. It was clear that every Tiger player was more hungry than their opponent for the ball, our tackling was harder and well executed and we continued to run in numbers moving the ball quickly at all times.

Our forwards finishing off all the good work by kicking plenty of majors Jack Jacobs had a day out in front of goal booting 7 while Jeremy and TJ tipped in for 5 and 3 respectively.

From a coach’s perspective, the most pleasing thing to take away from this convincing performance was the amount of contributors we had on the day. I commented in my last match report that it was now time for many players to stand up and take their game to the next level, and that is exactly what I got, a great all-round team performance.

Round 2 – 8/05/2010
After our solid effort against Marist the previous week, we found ourselves up against arguably the best side in the competition, the Belconnen Magpies.
The opening quarter was closely contested and played at a fast pace. End to end football was being played as both teams strung some good passages together with the quarter finishing with our boys trailing by a goal. I was extremely pleased with their efforts and asked the boys to continue playing attacking footy. As they left the huddle, the boys seemed full of enthusiasm and high spirits.

Unfortunately, our enthusiasm and high spirits were quickly eroded as the Magpies took total control from the first bounce of the 2nd quarter. Unsure if it was the magpies that lifted their game to a new height or if it was the lack of intensity shown by our boys who allowed our opposition to run in 7 goals to nil and the ease in which these goals were scored was my biggest concern. We were given a lesson on how to move the ball quickly by hand or foot to running support players who in turn kicked to leading targets. As our back six quickly found out, defending this type of ball movement is difficult.

Our intensity to win the ball in and around the stoppages returned in the second half and we were able to once again string some good passages of footy together. The scoreboard reflected our efforts in the second half restricting the Magpies to only 5 goals whilst we rallied to score 3 of our own. That being said however, for us to be a serious contender against a side like the Magpies, we cannot afford to continually rely on a handful of players week in, week out to do the job for us. It is time for others to get involved and become a worthy contributor.

Final scores – Belconnen 14.14.98 Tigers 4.6.30
Goals – TJ, Dan Osarek, Marcus Lawrence, Mark Solway

Round 1 – 1/05/2010

After weeks of training behind us, it was time to get down to business. Fine weather and a ground in perfect condition greeted us for our clash against Marist.
With the exception of only a few, we have been fortunate to retain all of our 09 players and on the way have picked up some first year players. Firstly I would like to say a big thanks to Jill and Nicole for once again sponsoring our team.

In view that our opponents got the better of us in our home and away games last year as well as the knocking us out in the finals, our boys could not afford the luxury to just ease into the game. Our game plan was to hit every contest hard and play on at all costs. Marist we able to score a major very early in the quarter before our boys steadied and got one for ourselves. As expected, several skill errors were being made by both teams which generated many
Turn over around the ground. The first quarter continued with the ball moving from end to end without either side being able to convert the many opportunities. Siren time saw both teams with one major each.

The second term was identical to the first with both teams getting their share of the ball. The Tigers back line led by Norm Lembit, Caleb Hardy and the Burns brothers stood strong and repelled many attacks. Whilst it wasn’t a high scoring quarter, our players were finding plenty of the ball and starting to run in numbers. Long goals to Jason Taylor and Marcus Lawrence late in the term gave us a small lead at the long break

The third quarter saw our game plan starting to find many holes in Marist structure. Jack Jacobs gave Ethan Callender a well deserved rest in the ruck and combined extremely well with all the onballers in Jason Taylor, Jeremy McDonald and Daniel Osarek. Goals to Norm, Jason, Jack, Marcus, Taylor Coughtrie-Neal and Daniel Perryman gave our boys a 6 goal to 1 quarter and a decisive lead at the last break.

We continued to run the ball in the final term and pressed forward in numbers. With the game securely in our grasp, further positional changes were able to be made which gave some players an opportunity to play a different role. Pleasing to note was the performances by our first game players, Kieran Schmidt, Tristan Kilpatrick, Cheyenne Bowers and Lachlan Tzovaras.

Overall, I was genuinely pleased by the efforts of all players. I would like to pass on my thanks to the parents who volunteered their time to undertake the various tasks that needed to be filled on the day. Our next game is at home against Belconnen who posted a convincing win on the weekend.

Coming off a bye can sometimes be hard to prepare mentally for, however our guys were excellent dismantling the Gungahlin Jets last Saturday at Amaroo.

Led by Simon Treloar and Toby Yeates the team were dominant from the start and continued to pile on the points every quarter and not allow the Jets a look in.

The signs are good that this team will progress deep into the year and play Finals footy and with good form from Aiden Kenworthy, Phillip Maher, Kieran Shea and Stephen Camp there is little doubt more wins are on the horizon.

Round 6 – 5/06/2010

The Under 16s St Edmunds Tigers Div 1 bounced back from last weeks loss with a hard fought 25 point win over Marist.
In a tough game the result was in the air all the up to the last qtr and it was our boys who prevailed in the end. Missing vice Captain Toby Yeates who was elevated to the Under 18s was not a hindrance to the team and in fact it steeled the boys into action knowing that they would have to lift to cover Toby’s absence.
Great to see Daniel Hespe and Graham John Lennon play extremely well on Saturday and Dave Hodder continues to be dangerous in front of goal.
Our Goulburn connection continues to contribute with solid games from Simon Treloar and James Armstrong.
Going into the first bye of 2010 Westy and Dave would be extremely pleased to be sitting 5 and 1 and looking to be a real threat in 2010.

St Edmund Tigers 12 – 14 – 86
Marist 8 – 13 – 61

Goal Kickers – Hodder 2, Lennon 2, Maher 2, Buchanan 2, Camp 1, Lee 1, McCormick 1, Treloar 1.

Round 5 – 29/05/2010

The Under 16s St Edmunds Tigers Div 1 had their first loss in 2010 when they were just beaten by Belconnen.

In terrible conditions the game went Goal for Goal for most of the day with the Tigers being behind by only three points at 3 QTR time.

The boys hit the lead early in the last but couldn’t hold on against a Magpies team made up of CATS rep players.

There were some encouraging signs that this team will be a force this year and that they can seriously challenge for the premiership. Good performances by Captain Stephen Camp, Toby Yeates and James Armstrong led the team from the front and they were backed up by Simon Treloar, Aiden Kenworthy and David Hodder.

St Edmund Tigers 6 – 1 – 37
Belconnen 8 – 6 – 54

Goal Kickers – Hodder 3, Armstrong 1, Stein 1, McCormick 1.

Round 4 – 22/05/2010

The Under 16s St Edmunds Tigers Div 1 had another fighting win last Saturday against the Eastlake Demons to hold onto equal top spot.

Goal for Goal for most of the day the Tigers steeled themselves fro a gritty win which shows the rest of the competition that they can win tight games.

There was an even contribution across the team but the form of James Armstrong, Kieran Shea and Toby Yeates was extra pleasing for the coaching staff.

Daniel Hespe celebrating his 150th game with a good win.

St Edmund Tigers 8 – 9 – 57
Eastlake 7 – 11 – 53

Goal Kickers – Hodder 3 Kenworthy 1, Maher 1, Lee 1, Hespe 1, McCormick 1.

Round 3 – 16/05/2010

The Under 16s St Edmunds Tigers Div 1 had their first real challenge on Sunday against a determined Tuggeranong Hawks.

In their biggest challenge this year the scores went goal for goal with the Hawks showing superior pace around the stoppages and it took a solid team effort to overcome the Hawks in a game that could define the tiger’s season.

Another stand out performance by Aiden Kenworthy has the U18 coach’s taking notice and there were more solid contributions by PJ Maher, Simon Treloar and Sam Perkins.

St Edmund Tigers 14 – 12 – 96
Tuggeranong 9 – 9 – 63

Goal Kickers – Kenworthy 6, Maher 2, Treloar 2, Galloway, Lee, Hodder 1.

Round 2 – 8/05/2010

The Under 16s St Edmunds Tigers Div 1 continued their impressive start to the season with a comprehensive win over Ainslie.

The team looked strong around the ground with a good mix of goal kickers. Every player played their role for the team looks to be gelling extremely well. The run and carry from the small brigade is cutting the opposition apart and with the Tigers tall timber working hard it was a complete game from the team.
