Two more into the 100 Club
In 2015 no players passed the 100 game milestone, but in the space of just a few short weeks we have seen four players reach 100 games. This includes Paul Williams and Andrew Swan who both achieve the milestone this Saturday in the 2.15pm game against Tuggeranong at Allinsure Park.
Paul Williams
Originally from Warners Bay in Newcastle, “Willo” was recruited to the Tigers in 2004.
He very quickly established himself as a mercurial forward capable of taking spectacular high marks and snapping impossible goals from all angles.
He has kicked somewhere around 400 goals for the Club but in 2007 he surpassed the 100 goal mark for the season, with 87 in Reserves and 13 or more in Firsts. This remarkable milestone was made even more memorable for the fact that it came in a game where club legend Mark Armstrong also kicked his 100th season goal for First Grade.
Willo hung up his boots at the end of 2010 but was coaxed out of retirement to be one of the elder statesman of the 2015 team after we lost a large number of players. And what decision it proved to be with the achievement of being part of the remarkable 2015 First Grade premiership and almost being named best on ground in the grand final after kicking 5 goals. One of Jill Bright’s favourites we hope Willo goes on for a year or two more yet.
Andrew Swan
“Swanny’s” milestone of 100 Club games (total of First and Reserve Grade games) is a step along the way to what we hope will become 100 First Grade games next season.
Swanny joined us from St Edmunds in 2009 and has gone on to win the Dane Quade Medal for best U21 player playing first grade in 2010; the Robert Anderson Rising Star Award for most promising junior – also in 2010; the Michael Haddock past players award in 2012; two Muir Medals (2010 and 2016); and the 2015 First Grade premiership where he was captain – a position he still retains.
A potential 200 game player we want to see Swanny in black and gold for a long time to come.
Both players will be honoured at this Saturday’s 100 Club Dinner.
